Media Release: Transport Canberra and City Services, 11 January 2018
From Saturday 20 January 2018, fares for bus travel in the ACT will increase by up to 2.6 percent, with cash fares increasing between 10 and 20 cents. This fare increase is consistent with increases in the previous two years, and will help offset the cost of significant public transport improvements underway in Canberra, as well as increased operational costs.
Executive Director for Transport Canberra Operations, David Matthews said that while MyWay fares will increase up to 2.6 percent, the cost of using public transport remains competitive against the price of parking in the City and the Parliamentary Triangle.
“I encourage Canberrans to consider using MyWay cards, as discounts apply to cardholders as well as monthly and daily fare caps,” Mr Matthews said.
The ACT Government is committed to providing Canberrans with a better seven-day public transport network and 2018 will be a milestone year for public transport in Canberra, with the expansion of the Rapid bus network.
The Rapid network will be supported by significant investments in new buses as part of the fleet expansion program, the development of a third bus depot in Woden, additional services for growth areas including Molonglo and installation and upgrades to bus shelters across Canberra, consistent with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
Free off-peak travel for seniors and concession card holders using MyWay cards will continue until further notice, as Transport Canberra evaluates the first 12 months of this scheme.
