The decision by the ACT Heritage Council to provisionally list the former bus depot in Kingston on the ACT's Heritage Register has been welcomed by the Chief Minister and Minister for the Arts and Heritage, Jon Stanhope.

Mr Stanhope said the listing acknowledged the historical significance of the site, which dates back to the 1940s.

The listing will be made permanent if no legitimate objections are raised during a public consultation period, which ends on 18 August 2010.

"I encourage all Canberrans with an interest in this building and the surrounding foreshore precinct to put forward their views," Mr Stanhope said today.

This is the second time the site has been nominated for the register. An initial nomination was refused in 2009 however a revised nomination, submitted in February 2010, was upheld by the Council.

In making its decision, the Council noted the significance of the building's fully welded rigid steel portal frames, its historic value to early transport workers and their families and its significance in the early and continuing development of Canberra.
