Sir Pompously

Here is a photo I got yesterday as VH-QOJ, a QantasLink (Sunstate) Dash 8 Q400 departing Canberra on a flight to Sydney.

Trolleybusracer

What a short flight how long does it take? 20 minutes?

Sir Pompously

Flight time is about 23 minutes, with a total trip time of 50 minutes normally.

I am going to split hairs here. But did you know that the Q400 series aircraft are simply known as Q400's and not as Dash 8's?

These same is also true for the Q300's too.

Buzz Killington

Nice photo Todd... I've always hated those Dash 8's Q400's.

Whenever i book a flight, i make sure its not on one of those little putt putt planes..

Snorzac

From what I have heard the Q400s (like the one featured are quite spacious. I think that you will find that it is the 200 and 300s that are the cramped ones

Buzz Killington

Don't like any of them.

If its a four-digit flight number, i ain't getting on it.

Snorzac

Well if you go to NT and get a four digit flight number you would be lucky enough to get a boeing 717, they are awesome. So not all four digit flight numbers are bad

Buzz Killington

Last time i went to the NT i got boeings both ways. I don't know much about planes really, so i couldn't tell you exactly what it was.

Snorzac

717 has rear mounted engines and 3 seats on one side-2 on the other.

Yes, however they are from the aircraft family of the Dash 8, so to me they will be Dash 8 Q400's.

Yeah agree they are the same family and to me they are a trash 8. But Bombardier, the maker of the things do not refer to them as Dash-8's so it is incorrect to refer to them as Dash-8's. It would be like for example refering to say a Sydney bus bodied by Phoenix as an Ansair bodied bus. Same same but different.

As I said they are apart of the same family, so I will refer to them as a Dash 8. It is also very common for people and companies to call it a Dash 8, I don't know one person yet that spots it and says 'Oh look a Q400'. It is normally 'Oh look, another Dash 8'. The exception is when you are getting ready to park it on a bay, some may ask 'Is it a 400, or a 300?' (Personally I just look at the rego).

You can refer to them as whatever the hell you like, however to me they will be a Dash 8. Fin.

If you want to be wrong call em a Dash-8, but drop the DHC bit as Bombardier have built them for some time.

PS. Do you also call a 717 a 717 or a DC-9?

Snorzac

Knowing Todd I would say he would refer to a 717/DC9 as what ever it is branded. If it is one branded as a 717 he will call it that, if it is branded as a DC9 he will call it that. I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong

It is apart of the Dash 8 Family (Dash 8 can also been seen as a generic term for a 'Prop' aircraft). As I said, airlines, and people refer to them as Dash 8's as that is what they are, Dash 8's (Even if Bombardier call them Q400's they are a Dash 8 400 series). The seatbelts even have Dash 8. I am rpetty sure the safety cards to aswell. Training refers to them as a Dash 8. I do not dispute this is what they are called, however I am using a generic term of an aircraft which is from the Dash 8 family.

Hows about grabbing that pole, giving it a good yank and pulling it out of your arse. Deal with it, I will call it what I like and you can call it whatever you like (Very much like OC500LE and O500LE, neither is wrong both are right).

One would have thought in a board full of enthusasts that one would want to use the correct name for something not something based on ignorance or it looks like this so of course it must be this. The only correct name for something is what the manufactuer called them, which in the case of the Q400 is simplly the Q series 400. Since the Q400 was first introduced around 9 years ago Bombardier has never once refered to the Q400 series as DASH-8's, although a few non Q400's did make it to market known offically as DASH-8-400. Indeed it was when they standardised on making all the aircraft Qxxx's did they officialy drop the dash-8 name and changed it to Q series.

Now if you were talking about Q300's then I would agree 100% with you, both DASH-8 and Q300 is 100% valid. Bombardier NOW referes to the Q300's as Q300's, but when Qantas purchased theirs they were DASH-8-Q300 so both is true. But when Qantas purchased the Q400 that was the only name they had.

Of course there are some odditied. Qantas(link), the main, if not only operator of them in Oz refers to them correctly in their history section as Bombardier Q400 series but in the timetable and seat map, incorrectly refers to them as DHC-8-Q400. the other oddity of course is their Q300's they refer to was DHC-8-300, which isn't correct either.

So one last thing, if I called ACTION buses 300-319 as Renault Agora Lines would I be right or wrong? Would I be picked up on this board for calling them that? I bet I would.

Snorzac

For crying out loud. DROP IT! GET OVER IT. YOU CAN CALL IT WHATEVER THE HELL YOU LIKE AND SO CAN HE.

As I have said before, I do not dispute that it is a Bombardier product, and called the Q400. However, I that is I will call it a Dash 8 using a generic term of which the aircraft is apart of that family. YOU that is YOU can call it what ever the hell you F**king like. Deal with it, get over it.

And the Irisbus Agoraline can be correct as either Renault or Irisbus.

I feel all has been said in this topic, and it will now be padlocked.

Ahh the children still run this board. No wonder I kept away for so long.

PS, my orginal comment on the matter was fair, I just kept on going because of the childish attitude in the reply. The proper answer would have been something like, Oh I didn't know they were technicaly Q400's, but no you carried on like a pork chop so I carried on too. Oh Sir Pomp, were you one of the snotty nosed kids who picked the mags up from my place a few years back?

Whoah. No need for such an argument guys. You are both entitled to refer to the plane however you each prefer.

Don't let a run-in with a moderator sour your experience. Its great to have you on the board with your knowledge of ACTION over the years.

No problem pleased they went to a good home. Sorry for the snotty nosed comment, you guys were clearly beyond that, what over 2 years ago now (cannot believe I have lived in London for so long, but will be home in 6 or 18 months) especially as you drove to my joint and you seemed ok! I take it then that the board is full of real kids then (as you guys must be pushing 20 now). In one way it is great to see interest in transport being taken up by much younger people.

PS. My interests go well beyond ACTION, aircraft have always been my number interest, hence why I thought I would inform the board, for the sake of accuracy and history the true name of this model a/c in a sensible and polite manner. Things just got out of hand, easy to do when I really wind up over something.

Buzz Killington

It's all good. FYI, all site admins/moderators are aged between around 19 and 23, with the exception of one. Aside from the drivers that are here and a handful of other members, most of our members are teenagers, which as you say it is great to see an interest in the younger crowd.

Easy for an argument to get out of hand, especially between people who are passionate about their interests.
