New high-density suburb planned

High-density living with a rapid transport link to Civic is part of the vision for the proposed inner-south suburb of East Lake.Six to eight-storey buildings adopting leading sustainable standards will dominate the development, designed to eventually to accommodate about 9000 people.
ACT Planning Authority chief planning executive Neil Savery said yesterday, ''We want to convince people high-density living is not the bogey many people think it is and to convince industry it can make money out of it.'' He did not want East Lake to be a theme park, but an example of what could be achieved in other areas, particularly in Molonglo.

The ACT Government had committed to retaining a passenger railway station at East Lake.
