Sir Pompously

TBR sent me a link to this website with photos of B2 2089, which was on loan from The Met (Or on loan from Comeng) for display in Canberra City. On the destination display is 'Gungahlin'.

Where was it on display? To me looks like civic square

Sir Pompously

It certainly is in Civic, looks like it is just outside the Canberra Centre, but could be anywhere along that walk.

It was right outside the Canberra Centre in Civic square, just north of The Canberra Times fountain. The tram display was sponsored by The Village Building Company - which was very keen on a light rail link to Gungahlin. My recollection is that the ACT and Commonwealth Governments had no involvement in the displays - and the silence of the ACT Government on the proposal at that time was deafening.

A later light rail display on the northern flank of Parkes Way and featuring two operating vintage trams was sponsored by the Federation Line proponents. The track ran for 100-200 metres and the public were invited to take rides on it.

smitho

grammatical correction - the public WAS invited to ride on it!

I think I recall the one on Parkes Way - that was only a few years ago wasn't it?

As for the first post, a great find by TBR!

I reckon somewhere in my "archives",  I'd have the PR guff which the Village mob handed out at the time of the display. It was on for two or three weeks and aroused alot of interest. That model of Met tram was quite new and innovative at the time.

PS: There is another item of Met rollingstock permanently located in the Canberra region, and still in The Met colours - the ex - Melbourne stainless steel electric train carriage which is in a compound at the Cooma end of the Queanbeyan Station yard.

Yes i have been shown that on my grand tour of canberra and Queanbeyan at midnight by a certain over tall person.

loved it

I kinda thought that carriage was located in a park.

Not sure if it has been referred to at any point in this topic but there is an old Melbourne Hitachi train near the corner of Henderson Road and Crest Road, that's about 500m from the railway station.

Ah, yes, the last two posts above yours refer to it. I still haven't gotten a photo of it yet, I just don't like the idea of yielding an expensive camera at the Queanbeyan Skate Park.

That is what myself and Smitho were talking about. Couldn't remember the name of the street it was on. I should though as I had an ex-girlfriend who lived in the flats just down the road. Tip to all, be wary of women from Queanbeyan!

That area of Queanbeyan especially, my grandmother used to live on Crest road as it was all she could afford and the neighbors were just revolting.
