The Featured Bus for February 2011 is Bus 490 – a Scania K230UB 4×2
Bus 490 was a Scania K230UB 4×2 (CNG) evaluation bus with a Custom Coaches “CB60 Evo II” body. It operated for ACTION from February 2010 until June 2012 on loan from Scania.
It arrived at Tuggeranong Depot on 9 February 2010 for a twelve month placement, although this period was later extended.
The vehicle was undertaking a field trial of a new Compressed Natural Gas system on the 5 cylinder, 9 litre engine that has since been introduced to the market. It was nicknamed ‘Koala’ by Scania’s Research and Development department in Sweden.
As a demonstrator vehicle, it did not carry the standard ACTION livery; instead it was white on all sides apart from a small touch of the ACTION colours on the front of the vehicle. However, its body was built to ACTION specifications.
Bus 490 remained in service at ACTION until June 2012, after which it was returned to Scania Australia for disposal.
