From The Canberra Times, 14 January 1982 –
Construction work had begun on the city bus interchange, the Department of the Capital Territory said yesterday.
Parking spaces in Alinga Street next to the Hotel Civic would be withdrawn for the duration of the work.
The statement said the bus layover area on the old Jolimont site in Northbourne Avenue, opposite Radio Station 2CA, would soon have to be vacated and work had begun on a temporary layover at the corner of Marcus Clarke Steet and University Avenue.
Layover sites were needed for buses which had to wait up to 30 or 40 minutes before making another run. Such sites meant buses did not take up street parking.
The statement said that about 100 car-parking spaces would be lost because of the construction work.
“Special alternative arrangements have been made for disabled drivers who were previously accommodated in the Marcus Clarke Street carpark.
“New parking spaces for the disabled have been allocated on the other side of University Avenue in the School of Music carpark, where there are suitable access facilities for disabled people”, the department said.
