ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, today reminded Canberrans that the ACT Government’s Nightrider bus service will commence tomorrow night and has kicked off a promotion of this year’s service to help raise awareness.
“Feedback from customers received last year has also led to a reduction in the fare by half to just $5 – meaning that as well as being safe and reliable it is also an affordable option for people to get home from the city,” the Chief Minister said.
The service will this year be provided by ACTION buses and will operate on 9-10 December, 16-17 December, 23 December and 30-31 December 2011.
Departing from Platform 7 at the City Bus Station, eight Nightrider routes will take passengers home every 90 minutes between 1am and 4.45am, with extra services to operate on New Year’s Eve. The Nightrider routes will service suburbs in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Inner-North, Inner-South, Woden and Tuggeranong dropping passengers at the bus stop nearest to their home.
Each bus will have CCTV facilities and ACTION supervisors will be stationed at the City Bus Station to assist with marshalling.
“A comprehensive marketing plan is also underway which will boost awareness of the Nightrider service and encourage more Canberrans to get on a bus.
“Promotion of the service includes print, TV, radio and web radio advertising, back of bus advertising and prominent signage at the City Bus Station to make it easier for people to identify where they can catch a Nightrider.
“The ACT Government has worked closely with industry groups like the Australian Hotel Association and with popular venues in the City to promote the service through bar coasters, posters and flyers.
“Feedback will again be sought in the new year to determine people’s views of the service and evaluate its success,” the Chief Minister concluded.
“I encourage everyone to try catching a Nightrider this year as a great alternative to getting home safely from festivities in the city this season,” the Chief Minister concluded.
