Title: Pre-NXTBUS Bus Stops
Post by: Buzz Killington on November 24, 2013, 09:04:42 PM
It seems the majority have been removed when the new bus stop blades have been installed - but there seems to be a few left!

I've seen one yellow & black one on Springvale Drive, and a blue and white one on McTaggart Crescent in Kambah. Presumably the latter has survived as no routes service the street anymore.

Any other sightings?

Yes, bus stops have to be in service (including weekend and school services) for the old sign / pegs to be removed.

There were some wooden pegs on Namatjira Dr, but I can't find out whether any School services run past them.

Also Noarlunga Cres in Bonython had unused stops, but not sure if these were pegs or blades/fingerboards.

As of last week, there were some pegs in Calwell and Theodore since these suburbs have yet to be upgraded.

Noarlunga had pegs and fingerboards last I checked.

From memory there are also some pegs and fingerboards on the part of Kingscote Cr not serviced by normal routes.

The stops on Namatjira Drive have been replaced, with some school services going that way (544 is one). Another factor was one of the pegs rotted away.

Another peg still in existence is at the old Gungahlin Cemetery Terminus.

The last (?) handpainted black and yellow peg which was in Ainslie has been removed. Does anyone know how old that style of peg was? Would be interesting to know how long it lasted! I note that style of peg in old shots on ACT Bus and RATEC so I suspect quite a while.

There used to be a SECTION peg (which used a red band and lettering instead of black) which I think was from the same era. Sections were abolished mid-70s which might be when the hand painted signs were updated to have a reflective SIGNAL BUS metal sheet.

There was also a serif-font hand painted SIGNAL BUS (possibly a stencil), but I don't know which one was older.

Most of the ex-ACTION pegs are to be reused into timber projects, http://www.cmd.act.gov.au/open_government/inform/act_government_media_releases/tamsd/2013/actions-wooden-bus-posts-recycled

I've seen bus stop signs of various designs in the gardens of aged care facilities / nursing homes in Adelaide and Canberra....complete with bus stop seats, but alas, no buses!

Pegs and older style blades still prevail in Lois Loder and other streets of Theodore.

Gordon now has new style blades teamed up with "Commuter Express" blades on the same pole.

Thanks for the info - so at least a while then.

I'm aware of the following disused pegs remaining:

Maitland St,  Hackett (2 X blue and white)
Knox St near Windeyer St, Watson (blue and white - even though the new blade was installed)
Wakefield Ave near Dooring St, Dickson or Braddon (black and yellow but I can't remember which side of the road it's on)
Scollay St north of Soward Way, Greenway (black and yellow)

As for disused blades, there are two stops opposite each other on Wakefield Ave, Ainslie, west of Bonney St.

All Bonython stops have been changed over, the McTaggart peg still survives.
Also it looks like the blades on Charterisville Avenue in Conder have survived again. They survived when the original 18 was withdrawn & now they are still there after Conder has had its NXTBUS blades installed.

There is a "SIGNAL BUS" peg as opposed to a "SECTION" peg in this photo of the Brassy House shelter (when first built) http://ratec.actbus.net/Bus%20Shelters/album/slides/01-Brassy%20House%20bus%20shelter.html

This photo has a "SECTION" peg with "STOP" on the side of it http://ratec.actbus.net/Bus%20Shelters/album/slides/06-Bus%20shelter%201972.html

I cannot find many photos of the tin sign pegs, however they were installed in my suburb around 1981/82.

With regards to "Blades" hanging around, Sturdee Cres in Monash still has ACTION blades as no school service travels along this route anymore.

I'll just add that the J Poles in Duntroon are still there. Perhaps due to them all already having stop numbers on them. They've also added NXTBUS blades at Tuggeranong and Woden Bus Stations. They could've thought about how they were to put them in better though.

The new blades are at Belconnen too - on top of the bollards at Westfield and on top of the shelters at the Community station.

The pair of orange and black blades on Lathlain St (beside Bunnings Warehouse), from the former route 73/74, were removed this week.

Does this herald the removal of all remaining disused bus stops?
Title: Re: Pre-NXTBUS Bus Stops

Possibly. Although at least a couple of them were removed during the process of blade upgrades, the stops on the 'clockwise' side of Watson at Solstice and opposite Prime were taken out when the rest of Watson was done.

This would indeed seem to be the case now. This article (http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/act-bus-users-need-a-phone-to-get-realtime-information-at-fingertips-20131226-2zy6q.html) makes mention of this.

Platform Six at Tuggeranong has a blade stuck onto the blue sign. Which leaves me wondering, is there a service to there now or is that planned for Network '14 and they are just a bit ahead of themsleves. It went in at the same time as the rest but it is still a bit odd seeing as most drivers hate platform six. There are also a few old style blades in Weston Creek. Somewhere on the 26/226. Think it was Streeton Dr or Perry Dr. Not sure.

All platforms (for collection of passengers regular or school) will have a number assigned and a sign attached. Not a huge fan of the separate blade at the platforms, hopefully with the new network they can put a new cover plate sign in the new format over the blue one or place the details in the timetable cabinet with the timetable in poster form. You will notice at Woden that the SCHOOL SERVICES platforms all have a blade.

I did notice one old blade on Streeton Drive the other day, it may have been one that was missed in the rounds or they didn't have a sign with the stop number to place up.

Thing is: nothing departs from Tugg #6 and hasn't for many years, yet it has a sign. But Woden #8 doesn't (at least I don't think it does), even though it was in use a few years ago.

That would be Woden #9b or just 9 depending which time you look. Every platform at every Interchange should have a blade but consistency isn't actions strong point

Some old blades are also on College St as well as Sidney Nolan St in Conder.

I noticed 2 stops with the pre-NXTBUS yellow/black bus stop blades along Sidney Nolan St at the Lanyon marketplace. They are the only ones I've seen since the replacement with the new stops with stop #s. Those stops don't show up on NXTBUS, so I'm assuming no services including school buses have been using that street for a while. When was this stop last serviced and by what service?

Network '05, Route 18...same for the old blades on Charterisville, Handaysyde, and Heidelberg St...

This map doesn't show it going down Sidney Nolan and Heidelberg, but I remember they did...
Oh and the stop near Aldi on Sidney Nolan with the old blade is often used as a layover spot by some drivers who know its there (though I haven't seen any in Network '14 yet)...I love seeing a stag parked in that stop too...parked facing the wrong way...probably thinks its in America or some other country with left-hand drive as the main thing...

Two stops with old blades on Streeton Dr after Heysen (southbound)...I think they may be temporary stops until the proper ones with shelters on the other side of Heysen are done...

I have seen bus stop pegs and signs in the gardens of nursing homes in Adelaide and Canberra.

Also Noarlunga Cres in Bonython had unused stops, but not sure if these were pegs or blades/fingerboards.

Clianthus St still had its old blades too...I imagine the end of scrivener not serviced by 1/937/936 still has them too from the old 35 days...dryandra st probably has some too at the yha. And the cotter peg is definitely still there (I doubt they'd remove that...to lazy to go out there probably...but it's a nice reminder...well, of the buses going out there.

Last time I checked, Dryandra street didn't have old blades, just the concrete enclosure with an empty timetable slot... Its spirit lives on.....

Senior Girls Grammar has an old blade at their massive bus stop, not sure why it is there anyway as they have 2 new blades already. (One for school services and the other for regular runs:1,2,3.)

Someone at St Andrews Groom street Hughes has an old yellow bus stop peg. I've always wondered how it got there...

That is for the residents with dementia, apparently dementia patients remember some things, such as catching a bus as a child, & are attracted to those things. The nursing home near Cooleman Court also has one. This is a reason why some lost, old people are found on the buses after Police Operations put a call out to ACTION.

I'm not sure how the next lot of old people will go, they'll be texting the stop number & "Stop Not Found" will come back on their iglasses.

The peg is inside the enclosure of the village, not on Groom street itself.

I also forgot to mention that Coranderrk (I think that's how you spell it) street has an old blade + shelter.

Here is a pic. Photo courtesy of ABC News 18 July (they had a segment, on yes, bus shelters!)

I go there almost every day. The only time I ever see a bus in plat 6 is for this school run, and occasionally in the peaks where you get a bus laying over there...

I don't see why they'd choose 6 as a designated set down point given they have 1 and 2...

There's not always a lot of logic behind some decisions! Could be the case if there's next to no layover time and a bus needs to commence a service from 7 or 8.

On topic, I noticed that the old blade on Clarrie Hermes Drive (just past Katherine Av) has been removed.

I cannot remember if this one has been mentioned or not, but Denison St (on that bit formerly served by the 30) opposite one of the SSO stops (closer to the Mint) has an old blade. Funnily enough, the other stop on that side of the street on that section had the bunker, blades, poles and all markings of its existence removed whereas this one looks untouched...
