Title: Heritage Shelters
Post by: Barry Drive on July 28, 2009, 01:06:46 PM
On the ACT Heritage Register (http://www.tams.act.gov.au/live/heritage/act_heritage_register (http://www.tams.act.gov.au/live/heritage/act_heritage_register)) the shelter in Doonkuna St, Reid is called Class A. There are only two other Class A shelters listed, both in Forrest on Empire Circuit and Arthur Circle. There are also Classes C, D and E elsewhere in Canberra. I'm not sure what the Oaks Estate one was classed as, possibly B.

[Buzz, perhaps these heritage shelters could be listed with photos on the history section of ACT Bus. Bus400's unedited photo could be the first contribution.]

I stand corrected (yet again!). That old style shelter in Empire Circuit (near Melbourne Ave) which you photographed recently does NOT have any regular non-school service passing it these days. The last time I ran through there was on the old No 83....that was a really good run - sorry to see it go (groan)....

There was a very fine old timber shelter on the corner of Novar and Schlich (southbound) which got burned down several years ago...don't know what class of shelter it was though. There is another fine old one in Cowper St, Ainslie on the southbound No 7 route. It is set a long way back from the street.  It has a largish room at the rear so I presume it was a terminus at some stage.

Below is a picture of the Yarralumla Shelter. These photos are courtesy of the RATEC Website.

It does look different to the other bus shelters around Canberra (from what I've seen).

Here are the other shelters on the ACT Heritage website.
Including the photos on the below links, I think I have a photo of every bus shelter on the list.

Giles Street KINGSTON (Outside Kingston Hotel) ...
Stuart 6 NARRABUNDAH (Barralier Street) ...
Strzelecki Crescent NARRABUNDAH
You spelled Ainslie wrong AGAIN!

The first Forrest photo is Empire Circuit (not Arthur Circle). The second one at Arthur Circle (cnr Monaro Cres) is in GRIFFITH, not FORREST.

And it's:
Giles Street GRIFFITH
Stuart Street GRIFFITH (cnr Barrallier St)
and Stuart Street NARRABUNBAH (cnr Strzelecki Cr)

You don't have a photo of the one in Oaks Estate (Hazel St), but it's not listed on the heritage register as it may have been destroyed. There is an image on Google Street View, but I'm not sure when it was taken.

The one in Oaks Estate is still there as far as I know (I last saw it by eye last time I was at Queanbeyan Station), I may swing by there tomorrow afternoon after work. You can see it on Street View.
