Unless you are living under a rock I am sure you have heard about this:
Summary:

  • Part of the number 2 engine of a Qantas A380 (VH-OQA-Nancy Bird-Walton) disintegrated in mid air over Indonesia's Batan Island whilst operating QF32 London-Singapore-Sydney.
  • Aircraft made a safe landing at Changi Airport, damage to number 2 engine and wing
  • Aircraft recently returned from heavy maintenance
  • Qantas has suspended all A380 services indefinitely
  • Qantas are advising delays on all A380, 747-400 and A330-300 operated routes, including domestic Sydney to Perth services
747s VH-OEC, OED, OJK and OJR may be returned to service to help cope with these delays. All but OJR are currently sitting in a dessert in Arizona.

What type of dessert? Chocolate mousse perhaps. (Couldn't resist.)

hahahaha......no, just because I can never get dessert and desert right, I thought it was the other way around.

I remember it this way... dessert (food) has two s's because you want more dessert ... that's just me though.

ABC's 4 Corners investigated this flight & came up with a few interseting things. A printed version can be found at http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2011/s3172488.htm
The video of the item can be found at http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/special_eds/20110328/qantas/

Repairs have commenced on Nancy Bird and she should be returning to service early next year. These repairs are been made at some outrageous cost to the airline.

Also just found this picture of OQA after it's first flight. Something that I never knew was that it originally wore the old Kangaroo.

Can see now why they had to modify the design of the kangaroo (ie new logo) in order for it 'to work' on the A380s.

Shouldn't Rolls Royce pay? They knew there was a problem with those engines (oil pipe incorrectly drilled IIRC) and were fixing it as the engines came back for servicing but neglected to tell the users of those engines about the problem. It's only thanks to the skill of the pilots that RR's gross negligence didn't kill hundreds of people.

I am certain that both airbus and Qantas are suing Rolls Royce for damages.

VH-OQA returned to the skys today on a test flight, it is due to return to Sydney using the call sign QF32 on Saturday. 'QF32' is now a disused flight number after Qantas' recent international reshuffle.

The flight will also be featured in Episode 7 of the upcoming Air Crash Investigation series.
