Title: NXTBUS Real Time Bus Service for Canberra
Post by: tuckern on August 16, 2013, 10:43:16 PM
Hello all,

Just scrolling through Twitter and came across a pleasant surprise from Shane Rattenbury. ACTION will be implmenting a real time bus service.

This link to the promo video is below:

Nice to see the TV's on the buses being used for something else other than ACTION advertisements. Will be interesting to see how long it takes before it is fully implemented.

In the meantime, you can now obtain timetable information by bus stop number via SMS similar to the system in Perth.

From the ACTION website, there are four options when sending an SMS:
NB Insert a comma between each number and input time in 24 hour time with colon (eg. 16:00).

In the case of 1 & 2, it will list the next two departures within the next hour. 3 & 4 don't seem to work very well (or at all).

Most South Region bus stops don't carry a bus stop number on the conventional bus stop blades at present.

However if the stop has a Hastus generated timetable display, the stop number is shown near the foot of the timetable.

There are probably more numbered stops than you'd think:

All Bollard-style stops display the stop number in the header.

Stop numbers were added for the Flexi-Bus services and many of these should still remain - sometimes the number will be on the pole rather than the stop blade.

Installation of the new bus stop blades which display the stop number has commenced in Kingston/ Griffith/ Narrabundah/ Red Hill.

You occasionally see the numbers stuck onto the old blades too.

Looks like a fair chunk of West Belconnen has been done too.

I wonder if the elongated "Commuter Express" blades will survive the purge (some stops currently have conventional yellow blade AND the commuter express blade).

elongated "Commuter Express" blades

The technical term for these (and your standard street signs) is amusingly enough, "fingerboard"

Might originate from the days when directional signs often carried a picture of a pointing finger.

Louis Loder street in Theodore is one of the better short streets around for variety in blade / post / fingerboard variations.

Installation of new blades (and removal of old signs / pegs) was completed in Theodore today. Other than some stops subject to relocation, is that it? Have all stops (in use) now had the new NXTBUS blades installed?

One stop on Melba St and one on Bradfield St (Downer) are missing blades altogether. The old ones were removed, but there's nothing to say the new ones weren't removed by vandals. Although I never saw new ones despite my daily commute on the 39.

Last time I checked the blade at platform 1 in the City was still old. Then again I haven't seen any stop number signage (or NXTBUS related stuff apart from the live indicators) installed at any Bus Station.

On the "Blue Rapid" platform at Cohen street there is a NXTBUS sign.
