Canberra Region / Re: Buses on Streetview
« Last post by Toyota Camry on Today at 04:27:36 PM »
I have located a number of buses in Google Street View, during some downtime in my office; the vehicles that I located are below.

Fleet / Blue rapid buses
« Last post by Toyota Camry on Today at 04:07:12 PM »
I have noticed that on weekdays; the blue rapid (300, 312, 314, 315, 316, 318, 319, 343) routes are operated with these bus types:

Scania K320UB Custom "CB80"
Scania K360UA Custom "CB80" Articulated
Scania K320UB Custom Coaches "CB60 Evo II" (14.5m)
Scania K320UB Volgren "Optimus"
Scania K320UB Bustech "VST"
MAN A69 18.310 Custom Coaches "CB60 Evo II"
MAN A69 18.320 HOCL-NL/E5 Custom Coaches "CB60 Evo II"
MAN A69 18.310 HOCL-NLTEP Custom Coaches "CB60 Evo II"
Renault PR100.2 Mk2 Ansair
Scania L94UB  Custom Coaches "CB60" Gas

These bus types do not seem to be common on the blue rapid route; I have noticed the Iribus and PR100.3 variants very occasionally, but they are not common.

Renault PR100.3 Austral Denning "Starliner"
Irisbus Agora Line Custom Coaches "CB60"
Scania K360UA Volgren "Optimus"
BYD Toro Gemilang Coachworks
Volvo B5RLEH Bustech "VSTH"

On a weekend; the bus types operating are much reduced. These are, to my best knowledge; the only bus types used on weekend route 300.

Scania K320UB Custom "CB80"
MAN A69 18.320 HOCL-NL/E5 Custom Coaches "CB60 Evo II"
Scania K320UB Volgren "Optimus"
Scania K320UB Bustech "VST"

It is noticable that whilst the Scania L94UB CB60 buses are used on weekends; they do not ever get used on route 300, but however are used on local routes. It is noticable that the Irisbus, Renault and Electric buses are not used at all on weekends; I recall around a decade ago the Renault PR100.2 buses were used on weekends on northside routes; but it has been many years since I had seen a Renault PR100.3 on a weekend.

As I said, the 11/11A is a classic case of if the service is there, people will use it. I got the bus to the airport for a flight this morning and there was about 15 pax on the bus and about 10 had baggage.

From 539 onwards, all buses have been evenly shared between depots. So it's possible that each will get 5 Bustechs and 10 Volgrens. Can't see Belconnen getting more artics than Tuggeranong.

Hit the nail on the head...the earliest flight you can currently make based off check in times is an 0715 departure if you really want to push it, this leaves at least 5 flights from one airline alone (plus whatever the opposition offer) not serviced by public transport on a weekday morning, evenings you do not have any service to the only arrival from both Perth and the Gold Coast each day as well as no access to public transport for passengers travelling to or from Canberra on a Singapore Airlines.

You could argue that services on this particular service should operate at earlier hours of the morning or later into the evening but then that raises the issue of what it connects with and whether it is worth operating a service with no connections.

Personally I believe that Canberra  should move to a 24 hour network with hourly to half hour trunk or rapid services connecting with flexible demand responsive area services. Whilst patronage isn't ever going to be high for these services, there is still a need for it in my opinion and this would solve the afformentioned issues with a service to the airport.

Realistically how many people are getting buses to the airport that are flying? I would say not many, most passengers would be working in the airport (though most would drive, or like a mate of mine who works there ride his pushy) or more than likley the business park.
