Nothing for us to start us off, but there is a Severe storm warning all the way up the coast from Batemans Bay to Sydney, and you wouldn't believe it, out west, there is a Total Fire Ban, for hot and windy conditions today!
Anything else to report?
Further to note... this should be reserved for SEVERE events only. If it is a light sprinkling of rain, then the 'Rain' thread is more relevant. Whereas if its a Thunderstorm that could cause damage, post it within this thread. Thank you :)
whoa, i just saw the most SEVERE sprinkling of rain guys... like omg
......We're expecting a storm or two this afternoon, a large cloud mass is descending on Canberra, and bringing along with it a few flashes of lightning and bolts of thunder, and a fair amount of rain. A Severe Storm Warning has not been issued, but just letting you all know we'll probably get a bit of boom crash opera, and drips and drops across rooftops and crops, provided we have crops avaliable to receive drips and drops.
Wouldn't you classify floods, bushfires, or terrential rain as SEVERE. Not some measely thunderstorms.
i've changed the thread title to something more appropriate
Michelago is REALLY copping it.
It has back built into black on the Canberra BOM radar now
Plus is a Thunderstorm warning advice
Canberra and NSw Area
Only John may post 'severe storm warnings' which never occur here :p
Well, I was considering a warning, but nah.....
Golf ball (ha ha Busnerd) sized hail reported in Michelago.
Ground services at the Airport were suspended this evening due to thunderstorms in area (heavy rain, high wind and lightning bolts), delayed a few of our flights. Power (Lights and Traffic Lights) was also out due to powerline damage around the Alexander Machonochie Centre (Jail) and South Care hanger on the Monaro. However very nice storm it was, spectacular lightning. Only wish I had my camera and tripod on me.
Tonight there was a lovely storm brewing to the east of the ACT, Sydney Airport was also closed thisafternoon due to severe weather.
A photo from tonight's storm taken at home

Maybe it is your Windows Vista Ultimate with Non Aero scheme seeing as though your graphicscard cannot handle it Mat? As I cansee it perfectly

Wha?
A rain storm hit Belconnen earlier this evening, causing localised flash flooding, and traffic disruptions. It was a doosy.....
hmm, didnt get anything down south
Yeah, thats strange, the cloud mass moved in from the south.....but very slowly.
bit of light rain this arvo, bout 3ish i think
Ah, fair enough, who knows, it may have intensified over the duration of the afternoon.....
how come there is always flash flooding and traffic chaos, yet this never happens. Everytime flash flooding is reported, nothing floods except the spillway at lake tuggeranong.
Because Belconnen is over 40 kms away from Tuggeranong.....
so because belconnen is over 40km away from tuggeranong, you get flash flooding that doesnt actually ever happen? what floods? that creek in macgregor?..gininnderra ponds?
No, roadside flash flooding, particularly on the inner streets of town, like Florey Drive...
so by flooding they just mean, streets with poor drainage systems overflow.. thats not really flash flooding, it just means they need a better drainage system there..
Backyards are usually immersed in water too.....

Like those 3 storms that Kambah, parts of Weston Creek & Woden had last year when we had (I think) 600 mils for summer. When the water levelin my backyard reached 10+cm deep.
Exactly.....But we're talking about Belconnen here.
yeah bus 400, how could you be so stupid, everyone knows only belconnen gets 'flash flooding'
Bloody Windy here, even experiencing power difficulties.....
bloody windy here too, no power issues though
Lucky you. The lights here keep flickering, dimming, etc. I think because of the heavily treed area in Macgregor, the power usually goes out there due to falling trees.
bloody windy here in the woden valley but no power issues
What the hell is your avatar?
typical of belconnen to have flash floods and power problems.
strong wind here but no problems associated with it.
All this must be from the majical storm that Perth had on Monday where we had 14mm in March & 34mm in April all in one day*. This is from ex Tropical Cycleon Pancho & the winds we had in Rockingham (far south Perth) felt like a bloody cyclone.
*BOM finsh the months rainfall total at 09:00 on the last day of the month & start the next month at 09:01 that same day.

It looks like its about to rain outside.
And there are two people walking up the stairs to the libary.
oh, i was just getting distracted there, dont mind me 8)
its SNOWING!
where? we have rain in belco
tuggers. we had light snow for about half an hour this morning. it was just enough to create a dusting on the rooftops
Yeah, my mates in Calwell and Conder were telling me about the snow.
thank mate
ok bye
yeah, in calwell, it was so cool!
actuarly, it was so cold.
haha.
i'm funny :P
srsly, i woke up, and was about to go to work, and got greated with SNOW!! it was awesome!
It snowed at the Raiders. We paid for grandstand tickets and then they let everyone into the grandstand for free. Great to see the Raiders getting up 72-12
Well I am shocked that no one mentioned that storm last night. At work we had a huge dust cloud come over the aerodrome with the tower stating 'they couldn't see a thing!' before the rain pelting down no less than 1 minute after. Lightning came and we were off the tarmac due to risk of being struck. First wave passed over, we were lucky to get rid of three flights then we were off the tarmac again! Great way to spend an hour, watching a storm unfold :P Wind was around 41 knots switching from a headwind to a tailwind causing a few flights, virgin and qantas, to go around.
it was a bloody good storm and there was another 4 this morning lets hope it fell in the right place
Yes I awoke at 3am to the sound of a storm, before it moved away. The Wattle Birds and Currawongs started singing after it, they were happy with the rain!
I woke at 3am, to find my cat scratching at the door because of it.
I BEG TO DIFFER!!
(Sorry, am living on 4 hours sleep, cant you tell?? :D)
I see no difference :P
john would be obsessed, POST Shop is selling weather stations for $24.95!

i'm quite obsessed/enthused. almost in shock. i've been meaning to upgrade anyway lol.

I found out that we have a way of checking mm of rain at work, there seems to be a jar next to an aerobridge. How primitive. Go to Australian Geographic, they have some nifty little weather devices!!! And I saw a ya wonton wonton at Charlie Chan's today.

Forecast for Friday
Rain developing in the morning with moderate to heavy falls later. Moderate northeast winds
Warning Summary
Warning for possible flooding with local heavy rainfall later tomorrow.
holly **** hope it rains but i don't want flooding
meh, it wont be a FLOOD as such, more along the lines of "oh crap, it rained so hard that the drains on northbourne blocked up and you have to drive through a huge-ass puddle"
ick..and i was going to wash my car today!
..but didnt. yay.
i washed mine on sunday :/
A few .2 wheel flaps will be up on Northbourne I would say
Yay rain..
Well, looks like we peaked at 36 in the City and 37 in Tuggers today. I of course enjoyed the view from my central air-conditioned comfort, although i did go out this morning.
Weird weather though. It randomly started raining twice earlier when it was at its hottest, and now its all clouded over and the wind is rather strong.

No.
The most accurate is the Bureau of Meteorology. www.bom.gov.au
38 in Tuggers at the moment, but hey - at least we're not as hot as adelaide.
Well according to the outside temp feature of 383 it is 41 in Belconnen
Currently 36.7 at the Airport and 37.0 in Tuggeranong Valley! Quite a warm day today, with Sunday through Thursday hopefully bringing some relief with Afternoon showers/storms predicted.
Relief? It's not going to drop below 34 as far ahead as we can see. Any storms/rain means a good chance it'll just get more humid.
thats it i am packing my bags and going back to the UK to cool of (joke)
Just to let everyone know the official forecast for Sunday is either a dry thunderstorm (lots of lightning & no rain). Or a wet thunderstorm.
lets hope its wet then i can stand outside or if not i can sit and watch the storm over MT Taylor from my bedroom window

Yes, why don't you go back to Tassie with their huge heatwave (28 degrees celcius)
we've passed today's expected top of 37, and its currently a little over 39 degrees - we might even crack 40 this arvo.
The bureau has also upgraded its forecast for tomorrow to 40 degrees.
we have.
*melts*
According to BOM we got to 39.5, which is bloody hot. Can't wait to work tomorrow in the 60+ tempreture of the bakery.
Shit. I'm working tomorrow, and our aircon's still broken till ..monday. apparently.
Nice knowing you all...i shall die tomorrow..
Officially, 40 degrees today. Technically, 39.6
40 tomorrow.
The temperature is still 30!!
Fantastic, Tuggeranong's forecast for today has been upgraded to 41.

6.00am - 21

Far out!
Currently on the roof of the studios of 2CA/2CC, it's 41.3C.
currently the top of john's head is 42.4C.

Peaked at 1523 today with 40.0. Melbourne is copping it, got to 47.7 at Essendon Airport and 46.4 in the city. Parts of Sydney got to 40, Adelaide also got to 40.
Watching sunrise at the moment, and victoria has also copped some pretty serious bushfires, rivalling ash wednesday.
today we have hit 39.5, that was at 1432, I would expect it to reach 40 at least, maybe more, the last few days the temp hasn't peaked until 5pm we may break yesterday.
39.7 @ 1437
Don't know about Belco/Civic/Gungahlin but we're getting a bit gusty down in Tuggers.
Same in Belco
both City and Tuggeranong currently sitting at 39.9
There's a storm heading towards the Canberra region ATM, should be a doosy :D
It is starting in Kambah ATM. Going by the radar, some pelting rain is due. Also the Cookatoos went silly 30 minutes before which is a good sign.
I can hear thunder and see lightning
Check out http://www.countryenergy.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/CEL/ce/others/weather/stormtracker2 it shows the approaching storm. The + are lightning.
It's finally hit Mitchell. Temps here have gone;
6pm - 25.1C
7pm - 25.6C
7.30pm - 25.9C
7:43 (now) - 22.5C
And it continues to drop.....
The rain is pissing down in Page
and now my mum is stuck on a plane at the airport while the storm clears
Ha ha, 2CC suffered a serious case of 'Rainfade'. Oh well, out of my control really.

Excitments over for tonight, should see the odd bit of lightning and isolated showers until morning.
Up the top of Kambah East we picked up around 5cm in my old dog bowl
There is a fair bit of rain ATM & looks like it might keep going for another hour or so
Canberra Radar is out & has been since Friday
It is raining really hard in page
Kambah has had 10mm, Isabell Plains 8.8mm, Airport 2.4mm.
However going by Country Energy Stormtracker (http://www.countryenergy.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/CEL/ce/others/weather/stormtracker2), it is a slow moving front that will last the next few hours
St George Leagues and half of carlton suffered a blackout last night, just as we finished our meals

YAY!!!! my fav weather storms and wind and the occasional power cut
just got some fairly heavy rain down tuggers, and a bit of wind.
I was starting up a Dash 8 out on the Tarmac and it started to piss down and got drenched! The wind made one of our flights go around, and prevented a few from taking off!
lol
Today
Conder picked up 6.3mm
Monash 6.2mm
Gungahlin 4.8mm
Isabella Plains 5.8
Canb. Airpot 4.6mm
More storms are on there way tonight. Mt Ginini has had over 50mm in the last 2 days. Most of Canberra has missed out on that. But our dams should go back up a tad.
There were storms in Canberra? And I missed them? Nooooooooooooo!
No storms that I can re-call since Monday John. If you look at the date of the post before yours John you may find that it was posted on Saturday.
Ha ha, oops. My bad.
IT'S COLD.
(maximum of 12.4 today, i believe. thankyou bom.)
balmy 21 here.
central heating rocks
BOM says we reached just over 13, but think about Mt Ginini, 2.1 Max (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN60902.shtml)
Looking forward to waking up to snow tomorrow, but we'll see how we go.
In Hobart, they're forecasting Snow above 400m (In Canberra, it's 600m), now there is a place I'd love to be!
Well today Mt Ginini, it recorded it's highest temp of the day (-1.2) at Midnight & it's coldest temp of -3.9 at 16:15.
Also the wind chill for the Tuggeranong was between 0-3 degrees with Mt Ginini gain having a wind chill of -8 to -10 degrees.
Finally some people may of noticed that snow has been blowing around today. They droplets were snow but the ground was too warm (shockingly) for the snow to settle.
Most of that moisture went around the Brindabella's but a bit of it made it over Kambah. I've just walked outside in bare feet & the ground is bloody freezing cold & the rain droplets feel a bit like melted snow. It feels like I'm out at Perisher Blue on a cold day at the moment, with the cold breeze coming in from the Brindabella's.
However, unless it gets any cooler quite sooner, there is a low chance of snow in Canberra tonight. But the wind coming of the snow covered Brindies will be bloody freezing cold tomorrow.
IT'S COLD.
and i can see the brindies from..the top of the hill in calwell. shit.
It is freezing! -4.9 according to BOM and -6 according to Scotty and Nige.
It's currently 3:20pm, and here's the highest temperatures recorded today:
Tuggers - 2.6 degrees @ 2.00pm
City - 4.1 degrees @ 2.33pm
Given that its 2.3 in Tuggers and 3.7 in the City right now, I think its safe to say we've hit our maximums for the day.
Up around Daley Crescent, Fraser I could see the blue sky on the other side of the hills to Canberra's north west. With the fog starting to drop down into Tuggeranong Valley.
Today was the coldest June day in 43 years.
Lovely, just lovely.
The Tokaji Balcony reached a maximum of 0C. I was quite enthused, naturally, being a severe weather gunzel.
starting to get more fog in the woden valley, mount taylor is not visable and has not been all day, and this cold weather reminds me of england at christmas time minus the snow :D
For the Tuggeranong Valley, today was the coldest recorded day in Tuggers Valley. Also today was the coldest day from Canberra Airport, as the coldest recorded day for Canberra Airport of 2.1 at 25 June 1949 is the coldest day for Canberra Airport ever.
Quote from: TP 3000 on June 12, 2009, 07:58:50 PM

its global cooling insted :D
I have just been outside & the fog has dropped to around 800m or less above sea level. As my place is now surrounded by fog & visibility is getting even lower. It is down to about 2-4 meters at the moment.
My work was really really really warm today.
:D
This evening a fog is rolling in. But at 18:20ish, it was only on the north side of Hindmarsh Drive
It was foggy in Hawker at 4pm
More than likely means another horror day at the airport tomorrow morning!

Quote from: news.comAustralian east coast on tsunami alert
THE east coast of Australia has been put on tsunami alert following a powerful undersea earthquake.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology says Tasmania, Victoria and NSW could be hit by waves tonight following the quake off the southwest coast of New Zealand's South Island at 7.22pm (AEST).
A bureau spokeswoman stressed no tsunami waves had been recorded by 8pm (AEST).
But she added it remained a possibility waves could develop and hit Australia's coast.
"It's quite rare that this would happen. At the moment no waves have been recorded but an alert has been issued for NSW and large parts of the east coast," she said.
"We're continuing to monitor and update the situation."
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said any waves would strike Lord Howe Island between 9.30pm and midnight.
The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the earthquake was about 160km west of the city of Invercargill, on South Island, at a depth of 33 kilometres.
Police in the town of Tuatapere on South Island say they have reports of minor cracks in buildings and stock falling from supermarket shelves, but there'd been no reports of serious damage or injuries so far.
The quake was felt widely across the South Island.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also issued a warning, saying: "An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicentre within minutes to hours".
The centre added it was not immediately known if a tsunami had been generated.
Lets hope nothing too serious comes of this.....
They more or less just cancelled the alert. Good to hear!
i know a guy in NZ, he experienced the earthquake. Said it was really weird.
'War of the Worlds' weird? I hope not, for all of humanitys sake.....
Looks as though this wind is going to persist throught the night, I've got my candles and torches at the ready!
Might get a spitter spatter of rain too, nothing substantial though.
Power went out at my place last night (Monday night/Tuesday morning) at 2am. But then again tonight's wind isn't as bad as Monday night. I went outside on Monday night & it was like a cyclone, while Tuesday it is just bloody freezing cold with wind & rain.
I'm sitting outside, and i really dont mind this wind.
...as i have a load of damp washing on the clothes line. + wind = Dry clothes! Huzzah!
Unless they blow away bubzie!
getting a fair bit of rain here today!
Yeah, got a few interesting downpours today. The weather here reminded me of the weather usually found in Brisbane, without that excessive heat.
ATM, There's a horizontal (W to E) cloud mass passing just south of Tuggeranong, it should produce an impressive light show.
Tuggers Valley had a thunderstorm earlier this afternoon, it is just quite windy ATM. The Beau of Weather cancelled its Severe Thunderstorm warning at 21:12.
However if you go to (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/stormtracker.jsp?lt=wzsector&lc=i7 (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/stormtracker.jsp?lt=wzsector&lc=i7)) it shows some lightning just to the south/west of Canberra. It may come in the next few hours.
...so much dust everywhere!
Try been in Takefu, Japan. ATM there is smoke everywhere because they are burning all thier rice paddies. Im reallynot liking Japan, it was 80% humidity today.
Loving these storms, they're the first real storms for the season!
Braidwood has received a whopping 44.8mm of Rain since 9am this morning!
Canberra has received 20.6mm, this is expected to increase with more storms passing through tonight.
Expect isolated thunderstorms tonight, with hail (hailing in Dunlop ATM) and lots of rain!
No rain at all today in Sydney.
I woke up at 6.30am to a completely orange sky, visibility was about 150metres, slowly got better throughout the day, and you can see the sun and blue sky now, but everything has a red layer of dust on it now.
Ahhh, nothing like a good ol' fashioned Sydney Media freakout/overreaction to a bit of bad weather
Did anyone see the dodgy media coverage by nine. Lame interviews, plus Janie Seal had a little segment and she kept moving around from side to side for no reason, plus someone was holding papers half into the camera, which was at a terrible angle anyway. Also when the news opened you could see someone shuffling papers in the reflection of the backdrop!
Tacky tacky news service!
Watching it now. Surprisingly WIN are playing the whole 'extended edition' - usually they just cut it off at 6.30 and say 'and that's where we leave nine news, tonight on win news.."

Lol! Go Triple MMM :P
rofl.
There has already been a storm in Canberra that lasted for over 2.5 hours & at my place we received just over 20mm rain. It sounds like another one is coming & should be here in the next little while.
Well, so much for that washing I put on the line before I left for work.....
don't worry, i'm sure your leotards will dry just fine if you hang them on the clothes airer.
unless i fail at reading bom website correctly, 24mm at isabella?
...it looks like it too!
Isabella my foot, the station is in Monash (Just behind Goodwin Village)!
And yes, 24mm would be correct. There was a massive industrial sized puddle which washed the underside of my car down the road from me, was the biggest I have seen it.
near the shops? that one was pretty much covering the turning lane and the whole side of the road!
Thats the one! The drainage is poor at that one point, I don't remember it happening before this year (Me thinks the Government needs to come and clean out the drain).
nah, why bother. gives me something fun to drive through.
I wonder how the one on Athllon Drive is (southbound just before Mawson Drive turnoff), that one can be fun when you're doing 80k's an hour & not expecting it.
If anyone is interested in how the river levels are after recent rains, if you go to http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/ (http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/) & click on what state you are after & zoom in on certain areas you are able to see the most recent recorded river height for that area. For info on the Murrumbidgee River Catchment, you have to click a bit to the west of Canberra (Junee area).
Came through from Eden today, showers on & off at the coast. Had snow blowing around in between Brown Mountain & Nimmitabel (whenever we were above 1000 metres). A continuous shower from Brown Mountain to Canberra.
I heard reports in Cooma that the road to Thredbo/Perisher was to be closed due to snow & the fact that the snow plows were in storage till next season. That doesn't make much sense to me though.
A bit of a thunder storm has just swept across the bottom end of the Tuggeranong Valley. When I last saw the storm it was mostly a lot of bright lightning with Kambah being on the edge. But further down had the heavy rain (sadly).
I don't know if anyone noticed the big black clouds over the mountains this afternoon.
Well a warning went out for Flash Flooding in the mountains & it was spitting in Kambah at 15:15, but the wind changed & the rain went back out west & dissipated.
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN65156.shtml (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN65156.shtml) - Expect this warning to cover the ACT eventually, as we have a cell moving over the west of the ACT, heading in a northerly direction.
We should expect unsettled weather over most of the evening, with the possibility of more storms developing.
The storm is west of Kambah at the moment. Watching the radar it will cover the suburban parts of the ACT. Luckoily the mountains are getting a drenching for a second day in a row.
The baby storm has now gone, as per yesterday the mountains got more of the storm that in town.
It did look slightly menacing yesterday arvo, a bit of thunder too. But I was out in Civic until about 11 and it was still very nice and mild by that time.
It fell apart like a Chinese motorcycle yesterday, it was very dissapointing.
Expect more of the same today, might be more interesting with the higher temps though. 31.7C in Mitchell ATM.
26.3 in Tuggeranong (and Civic) according to the BOM
What about the fore casted min on Tuesday of 18 (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/act/act/kambah (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/act/act/kambah))
Severe Thunderstorms are likely in this region from the Victorian border all the way up to Yass/Goulburn & as far east as the coast.
Thunderstorms are likely from Yass/Goulburn up to Orange & as far east as Wollongong
With only a chance of storms in Albury/Wagga up to Scone & Northern Sydney.
In the ACT there is a 80% chance of lightning during the day with a 30% chance during night. Low to Medium Fire Danger for tomorrow.
It was pissing down at about 1.30 this morning. Woke me up!
Yeah, a cell formed over the mountains at about 10-11pm, and travelled all the way to the coast. Had a bit of lightning and thunder apparently.
It was a very warm one today, fingers crossed for some afternoon/evening storms, but a lot of factors are working against that ATM.
There's a bit of lightning down this way at the moment
Weather Forecast 03/11/09
Moderate turbulence from 18:00 (tonight) to 06:00
Moderate/Severe turbulence from 06:00 to 18:00

Fire Danger Rating-Very High
Cloud increasing with the risk of isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. Areas of raised dust
with fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.
That's the highlights
18 tonight? damnn
The forecast was issued at 15:15 & some details are in effect from 18:00 (6pm) today.
A lightning show is coming up from the south at the moment. Heavy rain over the Tennant Range with a slight chance of making Canberra.
Also the Murrumbidgee River is quite high up & brown

I love the scientific terminology used there!
39 degrees today! :pop:
Spare a thought for our friends in Bourke, who sweated it out through temps of 46.6C. Sydney still sweltered, with a top of 42.2C in Penrith. Locally, we can expect temps to remain warm over the weekend, but not what we have seen today (thankfully!).
I don't have friends in Bourke, and chances are you don't either.
Quite a mild morning too. I was up at 5.15 and it was 20 degrees. Very overcast and a nice breeze - perfect morning for a bit of exercise, so I went for a ride around the lake. (Lake Tuggeranong that is)
Supposed to be 29 today in Sydney, lovely ay for a BBQ and a swim in the local pool. John will find out, if he decides to come to Mathews Party......
Apparently John has decided not to come, for no reason at all. Thankyou John
Huh?
Lol, obviously we wrote that when you lied and said you weren't coming, even though you surprised me and turned up anyway :P

LOL @ Chris' response!
Amazing weather conditions today with sweltering temps (42C) in Sydney, cold temps in Broken Hill (19C), flooding in Melbourne and strong winds here in the ACT region. Climate change anyone?
And rain here too.
John'd have to be enthused with the weather out there this arvo..
Haven't been outside today. I'll take a look (at bom.gov.au, CBF rolling over to the window and opening the shutters :P )
when did you get shutters?
Aaaaages ago. You've seen them lol. Oh, and Lolz at your avatar :P
Unlike Snow Patrol, I don't 'Crack the Shutters', but I do crack the shits every time I hear that damn song! Stupid Mix.........
It was definately an interesting day for weather today, very warm, and the approaching cloud getting more and more dense, and eventually providing us with a few storms. I'm just glad we didn't get yet another duststorm.
QuoteJanuary stops mucking around
SARINA TALIP
After a mild start to the New Year, a four-day heatwave is set to descend on the ACT today giving up an ugly set of numbers.
The mercury is expected to soar to 36 degrees today, it's predicted to hit 37 tomorrow and Monday, and Tuesday will be a shocker at 39degrees, perhaps even higher.Bureau of Meteorology Canberra office meteorologist Senaka Wijekoon said the average temperature for Canberra in January was 28 degrees.
''The last time we had four [consecutive] days of above 35 degrees was in February last year,'' he said.
And since the bureau began keeping records in 1939, only 14 such heatwaves had struck Canberra.''Four days in a row of 35 degrees is certainly not common,'' Mr Wijekoon said.
A high-pressure system moving across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand was to blame.
''So that's driving these hot northerly winds over us and they're coming from the interior of the continent,'' he said.
''The winds will actually pick up a little bit towards the Tuesday ... and that's why the temperatures are going to hit 39 degrees.''ACT Rural Fire Service chief officer Andrew Stark said there was a possibility of a total fire ban on Monday or Tuesday ''depending on the final forecast''. The late spring rain and the rain that fell at the Christmas weekend meant the level of grass growth in the ACT was at its most vigorous since ''the late '90s''.''And this hot weather takes all the moisture out of those grasslands and cures them, which means that they become more volatile and burn with a lot more intensity if a fire does come,'' he said.
Canberra isn't suffering alone. Fire crews across South Australia and Victoria are on high alert today and record temperatures in Western Australia yesterday were being blamed for the deaths of 100 rare black cockatoos.
A trough passing through the capital on Tuesday night should bring the mercury down to a more comfortable 31 degrees on Wednesday and to 25 degrees on Thursday.
ACT Ambulance's deputy chief, David Dutton, said in heatwaves it was often the prolonged exposure to extreme heat over a number of days that could cause illness or even death. ''[Most people] can handle one hot day, two in a row, not so good, three, four, that's when it can really start taking a toll on people.''He said symptoms of heat exhaustion include nausea, headaches, faintness, dizziness, weakness, vomiting and loss of sweating.
''If they stop sweating that's a real danger sign,'' he said. ''People should call triple-0.''Elderly people, young children and babies, as well as people who were ill, were most at risk.Mr Dutton urged people to check on family, friends and neighbours at risk a couple of times a day. He also wanted to ''hammer home'' the important message of never leaving children alone in the car.
For the record, the forecast for the next few days is currently:
Sunday Fine, mostly sunny Min 18 Max 37
Monday Fine and sunny. Min 18 Max 37
Tuesday Fine, mostly sunny. Min 20 Max 37
Wednesday A few showers developing Min 20 Max 33
Thursday Becoming mostly fine Min 12 Max 25
Friday Mostly fine. Min 12 Max 30
Saturday Mostly fine. Min 12 Max 30
Still, could be worse. Adelaide has 43 tomorrow and Monday, and hit 42 today.
:WOW:
It's still 31.6C at this very moment. It looks as though not a whole lot of sleep will be had tonight.........
I'm still awake, its too hot 4 me 2 sleep :(
According to WeatherZone, last night's minimum was 24.4°C at 6am (at Canberra Airport). Tonight is forecast to be 19° at 9pm and 16° at 6am.
I managed to sleep, but woke up feeling very hot this morning.
The hottest night in 20-something years apparently.
I only got to sleep at 4.30 then i woke up at 8.45 :( because of my sister and my dad cleaning her room, its nice and cool now and the sky looks like it wants to pour down with rain
I'm back down the coast and last night i slept 10pm to 12pm, a nice 14 hour sleep :-)
Just a heads up, there are quite a few storm cells around the region this afternoon, associated with a Severe Storm warning from BOM.
Looks like it might get a bit hairy this afternoon.
Yeah, we got a few loud bits of thunder and a ten minute downpour in Tuggeranong about twenty minutes ago.
Today was a bit all over the place. Very nice this morning, got rather hot by lunchtime, then some lightning, a very dark sky and some rain..
Well as we all know, lots of rain today! The Weather Station here in Monash has recorded 36.2mm of rain (up till 9am this morning) with today only having 14.6 currently!
There was quite the number of spectators at Scrivener Dam earlier too. The Molonglo was getting a bit flooded due to all the extra water coming from the dam.
Today we have had 29.2mm since 9am, and in the 24 hours to 9am this morning, we had 56.2mm :pop:
Total rainfall for February so far is 88.6mm, compared to 7.8mm in January!
Good to have all this rain, and with the inflows into the dams we should see a nice increase in their levels over the next week or two.
Yeah I noticed in the times a photo of the dam with the gates open! Am not sure how long it has been since I last saw that!
Quote from: Sir Pompously on February 14, 2010, 06:04:38 PMAm not sure how long it has been since I last saw that!
It's been 8 years since the gates were last opened according to local news outlets.
It's good to see Ginninderra Ck with a healthy amount of water in it, it certainly is something I'm not used to seeing.
Nice light show tonight.....
From around 18:00 last night (7 March 2010) until 01:00 this morning in Kambah we picked up 75-80mm
53.6mm in Tuggeranong to 9am, compared to 22.4 in 'Canberra'
Looks like a bit of localized heavy rain today, with torrential rain hitting Red Hill, Narrabundah & Fyshwick this morning. I also know that out near the airport coped it, with my boss describing it as heavy rain. Now he was lucky as he would of normally rode his motorcycle out to the airport, but decided to take the work ute instead.
Other parts of Canberra coped it in the afternoon with a fast moving front moving north & heavy rain hitting Mitchel & parts of Dickson & Northbourne Avenue suffering minor flooding. Kambah was also hit with a gap in my leaf covered driveway of where the water rushed down & water even being high enough to go over the 6cm step to make it into my garage..
Notice how the clear, blue sunny skies of the past few days wasn't repeated today, even though the weather forecast suggested it would? As the day wore on, the sky got filled with more and more misty, light cloud. You might wonder why!
As I rise to do my shift well before dawn, I was able to observe the changing sky from daybreak. At dawn, things looked promising, just like yesterday and the day before. But by around 0900, there had been enough jet plane activity over Canberra for the sky to become criss-crossed with jet trails. Normally these blow away in no time and are not a problem.
But on days like today, they just sit there and get ever bigger and smudgy until adjoining trails start coming together, and before you know it, what was a clear blue sunny sky has become a murky, light grey misty sort of sky, lacking the clarity of days like yesterday. Often this effect from jet trails can be an advance sign of changing weather conditions. I notice the weather bureau is already talking of a change early in the new week. This site goes into more detail about smudgying jet trails etc...http://www.docweather.com/2/show/40/ (http://www.docweather.com/2/show/40/)
The wind sock at the airport was dead still this morning. It certainly was a beautiful morning.
I don't know if anyone else is aware of this saying, but something I've been taught about the weather is:
"Red sky at night, sailors delight"
"Red sky at dawn, shepherds beware"
It's going to get fairly hairy down on the South Coast tonight;
Quote from: BOMTop Priority for Immediate Broadcast
NSW SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
Destructive Winds, Flash Flooding, Damaging Surf
For people in
South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Illawarra
Issued at 11:00 pm on Saturday 29 May 2010
Synoptic Situation: 9:00 pm EST Saturday
HEAVY RAIN, DESTRUCTIVE WINDS AND DAMAGING SURF EXPECTED ALONG PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN NSW COAST AND ADJACENT RANGES ON SUNDAY
On Sunday a low pressure system is expected to develop off the southern half of the NSW coast and deepen rapidly. The system, with its associated heavy rain and damaging winds and seas, is forecast to affect the South Coast and eastern parts of the Southern Tablelands from early Sunday morning. The system is then expected to slowly track northwards, affecting the Illawarra coast later in the day.
The precise position and movement of the low will determine the location of the heaviest rainfall and highest wind and seas, and this warning will be updated regularly as the system develops.
Winds are expected to average over 65 km/h in the South Coast and eastern parts of the Southern Tablelands from early Sunday, and possibly be over 90 km/h along the coastal fringe. Gales may extend to the Illawarra district later in the day. Peak wind gusts may exceed 125 km/h, particularly near the coast.
Very heavy rain is expected to cause flash flooding from early Sunday in the South Coast and eastern parts of the Southern Tablelands districts. Heavy rain may extend to the Illawarra district later in the day as the low tracks north.
Damaging surf conditions, with waves exceeding 5 metres in the surf zone, may produce significant beach erosion on Sunday along the South Coast, extending to the Illawarra later in the day or on Monday. Water levels above the highest astronomical tide of the year are possible.
Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.
Emergency services advise do not enter flood water. Stay well clear of creeks, storm drains and causeways.
Emergency services advise you check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary, raise goods and electrical items.
Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on telephone number 132 500.
The next warning is due to be issued by 5 am Sunday.
This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
As well as this warning, the entire South Coast is on Flood Watch as well.
This is not a storm system to be taken lightly, for anyone down there, make sure the radio is switched onto 2EC, Power FM or the ABC, and heed all warnings and alerts given by the SES, or local authorities.
Hopefully it isn't too bad, but I for one will certainly be keeping an eye on it this weekend.
14.2mm in Canberra since 9am. Bit of a shame we didn't have some more solid rainfall.
We should get plenty of rainfall by Tuesday.
An update on the situation down on the South Coast;
Power has been cut to the majority of the South Coast, due to strong winds which are gusting at 135km/h.
Road closures are numerous,
- Princes Hwy at Bodalla, Narooma, Tilba Tilba and Dignams Creek due to fallen trees, and Quaama due to a collision between a car and a fallen tree.
- Snowy Mountains Hwy at Bemboka due to fallen trees.
- Mt Darragh Rd due to fallen trees.
While the South Coast are currently getting a reprieve from the rain, another stormfront is expected this afternoon, and it has been stated that "100-200mm of rain is not out of the question". Flash flooding is more than likely to occur throughout the afternoon as a result of this, and has already occured in isolated cases.
Coastal inundation is also possible for residents by the ocean, with swells of 8-9m battering the coastline, which is expected to cause severe coastal erosion.
The SES have suggested you keep indoors, and to postpone all unnecessary travel until the storm subsides.
This system is similar to a Category 2 cyclone.
For more information, listen to local radio stations, or visit http://www.abc.net.au/news/southeastnsw/ (http://www.abc.net.au/news/southeastnsw/)
Wind has started to pick up here, atleast in the valley. The Maple in the back yard has now lost most of its leaves, after only about 15 minutes of wind!
A bad situation for the South Coast, but there is nothing anyone can do but to sit back and watch what happens (If they can get Arena, Austar would be out aswell with the power gone).
I've just come back from Milton on the South Coast. Friday & Saturday nights we had big wind gusts, during Saturday we had rain on & off. Today the wind was picking up a bit & the health resort owner advised us to leave early as 130+k winds were predicted & it is felt worst where we were on the hill. All the way down the coast we had wind gusts & rain on & off. Showers all the way from Bateman's Bay to Canberra. I feel sorry for the rest of my group that was racing the weather up the coast to the Hunter region & those of them catching planes from Sydney this afternoon.
But the SES were hanging around the main street of Braidwood.
To add to my post, below is part of the SES briefing on the rough weather.
Quote
Background:
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) currently advise a low pressure system off the coast of
NSW has the potential to form an East Coast Low impacting across a footprint area from the
Hunter coast in the north to the far NSW South Coast and adjacent ranges, by Sunday 30
May 2010.
Current Situation:
This low pressure system has the potential to deliver severe weather over a 2-3 day period
commencing from Saturday 29 May.
The forecast includes heavy rainfall with possibility of minor to moderate riverine flooding,
gale force winds, heavy seas and swell conditions.
The greatest impact of this weather system is predicted to occur Sunday through to Monday,
with the South Coast, Shoalhaven and identified as having the greatest potential for riverine
flooding.
Predictions of 100 – 150mm rainfall over a 24 hour period are possible in affected areas.
The BOM indicate the possibility of Flood Watches and severe weather warning by Saturday
29 May.
BoM Severe Weather team and hydrologists will monitor rainfall in affected catchments
during Friday 28 May, leading into the weekend.
SES posturing for operational response at State, Region and Unit level commencing early
Saturday 28th.
SES planning and strategies continuing for the potential impacts of this weather activity on
the Upper Bulli Rail Basin Dam, in light of concerns and SES evacuation response actions of
26 May.
SEMC members will be receive a follow up brief by the afternoon of Friday 28 May, on
developments and SES response plans to be undertaken in relation to this Severe Weather
event.
At this stage it is not planned to conduct an SEMC a telephone hook-up.

Flooding has reached the township of Bega, with the Bega River peaking at a height of 5.3m.
The RTA website reports a road closure on the Princes Hwy in the vicinity of Kisses Lagoon, due to the flooding. Restricted access may also be present on Buckajo Rd, which runs alongside the Bega River.
Hopefully this inundation is limited to roads, and does not affect establishments of any kind.
I think that wind in Canberra last night blew the remaining leaves off the trees to prepare us for winter tomorrow.
The Tathra Road in Bega has also been closed, but the section I am thinking is closed is a flood plain/swamp.
The small town of Nimmitabel recieved 139mm yesterday & this is on top of 120mm in one day a few weeks back. Which is a big improvement over previous years of very little rain.
Yeah, you're right, the flooded section is in Jellat Jellat, where the road is basically 5m above sea level! The Tathra Rd (Snowy Mtns Hwy) runs directly through Penooka Swamp.
Unfortunately, there isn't an easy detour, with (at last glance) a closed Dr George Mountain Rd, to travel from Bega to Tathra, you are required to trek down to Merimbula, then back up to Kalaru via Sapphire Coast Dr.
Yeah, definately a turnaround for Nimmitabel, receiving just under half of it's annual rainfall in a three day period! It's definately welcome though.
Actually, it appears some local roads have been opened;

This cold weather is beautiful :) i'm loving it even though a lot hate it but hey not everyone loves cold weather like me
Am hating the cold days, am loving the cold nights. Today was just shocking. With Wind Chill, about 1.8 at work today on the airport Ramp (Wind made worse by lack of protection).
looks like rain !
During the recent cold weather, the town of Cooma received a bit of snow, with a report that on Tuesday that visibility was very poor due to snow fall.
It has also been nice to watch the snow showers on the Brindabella's.
Are you meant to be sounding like a news reporter?
yeah
BoM weren't wrong with the bad weather for the Snowy Mountains with very strong winds at Perisher & very icy outside. I feel sorry for the bus drivers stuck outside putting snow chains on & off.
But the mountains still look beautiful looking

Pretty bad weather for flying into Canberra, there is a rather strong crosswind just off the main runway at the airport. Sydney is worse, I thought we were going to do a go around just before touch down it was that bad.
This weather is pretty crazy. A tree has fallen on my house. The SES have just arrived to clear it up.
Saw this on facebook, we are awaiting photos zac
I spent the day in Junee & Wagga, driving from Junee to Wagga you could see a wall of rain heading west. Then all the way home I would have 2-3k's of pelting rain, where you couldn't see the car in front & then 5-6k's of light showers, the strong wind gusts near Yass didn't help either. It is good to see that the Murrumbidgee River is higher then when I saw it a few years back & even higher in a few hours.
I checked out the Murrumbidgee River at Point Hut Crossing & it is just below the bridge, but I expect it to be shut shortly.
On a side note, ABC Radio was reporting that Adelaide's dams received 13 gigalitre boost over the last few days.
Your house was given a mention in today's CT Metrobus.
This front has reached Christchurch & Kaiapoi residents are being evacuated due to flood warning.

Still waiting for the photos
They have been on fb for ages
Below is a paeragraph informing the SES of the upcoming weather:
Quote
BOM has a current Flood Watch for the local region. Their advise this morning is that the ACT and region can expect some rough weather over the next few days.
WED 13 OCT: some showers this afternoon becoming constant rain later in the night and into tomorrow morning.
THUR 14 OCT: showers throughout the day leading into heavy rain later in the afternoon and over night.
FRI 15 OCT: continuation of rain periods throughout the day.
BOM feel that the ACT and region may see up to 50mm of rain over THUR and FRI. There may be damaging winds and cold temperatures with some snow across the region forecast for FRI evening. This may well see local flash flooding occurring and normal storm and flood RFA's.
BOM feel that during this period SWW's will be issued as required. As per normal the SES Duty Officer will send out SMS warning and keep you updated as things occur.
As well as this, ESA are getting sandbags ready.
This evening the ACT State Emergency Service issued a media release for flash flooding predicted overnight. It is predicted the ACT Region COULD receive 50mm overnight ^50-60k winds.
To put the rain into perspective from 03:00 Wednesday to 02:00 Thursday my place received 50mm & that 50mm soaked the ground very well. So any more rain will be run off into local storm water drains. But at the moment it looks like the rain won't be here for a while yet as it is still is Adelaide & moving slowly, probably around 03:00 again.

Rain since 9am today:
Canberra - 11.4mm
Tuggeranong: 43.8mm
My house recorded 55mm today & 50mm on Wednesday.
The Murrumbidgee River was at the 1.5m flood marker at Point Hut Crossing at 19:00 today. The Hume Highway has been closed near Holbrook due to flooding.
The Queanbeyan River was at minor flood levels above Googong Dam tonight.
Hopefully Googong Dam will be the next dam to overflow shortly & that Lake George fills up.

The photos on Corin Road are rare as not long after I photographed the landslide I reported it &an hour or so later the road was closed at Woods Reserve.
The storm is closing in on my house in Page, it is gonna be big!!
In case you are living under a rock, a severe weather alert has being issued for the ACT.
There was a severe storm out Gungahlin way earlier this afternoon. Out at Mitchell we had 3-4cm hailstones. Sadly Tuggeranong Valley missed out on that storm & again we set to miss out on this next storm.
no, i think we got it.
It has come through now according to BoM (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN65244.shtml (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN65244.shtml)) we were set to miss out, but I don't call this missing out.

Well it was an amazing storm with plenty of action and one hell of a lot of water falling into the dams, filling up creeks, rivers, and our floodways worked to capacity! Looking at RiotACT there are some fantastic pictures on there, did anyone here manage any? By the looks of it, Oaks Estate Crossing is under one hell of alot of water, one photo shows the mere top of a sign and no height markers in sight. Scrivener Dam is functioning with two gates open, a possible thrid is rumoured to open tomorrow. Googong is overflowing and using its spillway, which before it was breached looked to still have construction bollards in place (Hope they got removed!).
Grabbed two photos of Scrivener tonight, the first shows the flood gates (Looked great on small screen, put it on the computer and it was a little blurred). The second is people watching the dam, there was a good 15 people out there.

Below is a media release on the status of road closures from as of Monday 6 December. Tis has been changed a little bit with Boboyan Road re open (from Tharwa at least) as well as a few other roads & for obvious reason Smiths Road will be closed for a while. This is likely to change in the next 24 to 48 hours as most of the predicted deluge will be run off & it won't take long for the rivers to flood again.

More rain was forecasted for tonight, but this has been downgraded. ACT ESA had set up a incident management team today & this has been closed.
Rain and a good storm now outside coming from the person who had to walk to Woden and get soaking wet from it
The 3 month temperature & rainfall guide have been released by the Beau of Meteorology. By the look of things, 2011 will be the same as every other year. The information can be found at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/temp.seaus.shtml (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/temp.seaus.shtml)
Also as most of us know, Canberra is in for a hot day on Saturday. Well going by some Beau of Meteorology data, the ACT is to experience most westerly winds on Friday, these moving to WNW winds on Saturday & then swinging around to SW on Sunday. No where is NSW is expected to experience anytime with a Fire Danger Index above 50 for the next 3 days. With the Fire Danger just going upto Very High for areas east of the ACT & surrounding Sydney & Newcastle.
It is a different story for Victoria, with parts of north west Victoria predicted to have a catastrophic fire danger for Friday, but downgrading for Saturday. I am unable to get a full picture of Victoria & can only see a small area.
There is currently a storm With a lot of action
A storm is currently coming into Canberra from the south. The clouds are quite dark & according to radar, heavy rain is predicted.
EDIT
I caught up with this storm out at Hume, it was a monstrous storm, with a lot of hail of varying sizes poor visibility due to the rain as well. I'll post a video or two of it sometime soon.
That storm last night was Epic! Lightning and heavy rain, closed the tarmac at the airport for a loooonnnnggggg time (Love our new Alert system, plays an Air Raid Alarm for the duration on the tarmac :P). Had a fun run from the terminal to the staff carpark, drenched as hell, and Zac got stuck in a huge puddle (Flash Flooding John? :P) because the drainage is so s**t at the airport. Anyone get any photos?
Lulz @ the air raid.
It really was strange weather yesterday. I was coming along the Hume/Federal Highways back to Canberra in 35 degree heat, only to have the temperature drop by ten degrees in five minutes and got pelted by rain. It suddenly cleared to a literally dry road near Captains Flat, and heated right back up to 35. Then there was the storm last night - our gauge recorded 60mm. There was a hell of a lot of water, branches and bark on the roads too.
It was another spectacular storm this afternoon. It hit Mitchell around 15:30 & it pelted on & off for the next hour after that. All the way from Mitchell to Kambah there was a lovely light show to the west, with the strikes appearing to be non stop.
Was quite a nice storm. Helped bring the temperature down too - was quite uncomfortable in the middle of the day.
McDonalds Belconnen lake was inundated due to poor drainage, on the front patio water was knee deep and water was ankle deep through out most of the dining area.
Was not a nice storm had to walk home it it. Drenched :D, lots of thunder though.
There was a lot of electricity in the air yesterday. Off the tarmac quite a few times, managed to board a few in between to atleast get the out onto the taxiway. One place you don't want to be around outside in a storm is an airport. Apparently may have damaged some infrastructure i.e. runway lights etc, according to a captain who came in.
Does anyone know if the Canberra Airport weather station has been moved? I ask as I was out that way on Monday & the building which I am 98% sure was the BoM Canberra Airport weather station was.
There is a Bureau of Met building on the airside of the Fairbairn RAAF Terminal which you pass close to on the approach to the ACTION terminus at Fairbairn - looks pretty new.
It's a tad windy tonight, made me loose feeling in my ears waiting for my bus
Looks like we've just had our first 40 degree day in a few years..
Thankfully I was indoors (I hate the heat A LOT being a pom)
For the avid storm chaser, there is a group on Facebook of storm chasers from around the ACT, it's called ACT Storm Chaser/Photographers (https://www.facebook.com/groups/116405378520710/)
Don't tell John!
There is potential that we may lose part or all of the suburbs of Tharwa, Banks & Gordon tonight or later this week due to a firestorm; it will be a long night for these areas. At this stage, bus services have not yet been effected; routes 80 & 81 are likely to be suspended at short notice.
