Minister for Transport and Roads David Campbell today announced that the NSW Government had finalised contract negotiations with the Pearl Consortium and that work on the design and delivery of Sydney's new electronic ticketing system is now underway.

The total value of the new electronic ticketing system over 15 years is about $1.2 billion. It will deliver to greater Sydney a system comparable to London's "Oyster" card.

Last month the NSW Government announced Pearl as the preferred proponent to deliver the system.

"The signing of this contract with the Pearl Consortium completes the formal procurement process and now the focus can be on delivering electronic ticketing," Mr Campbell said.

"We anticipate the system will begin to be rolled out on public transport by the end of 2012.

"Pearl Consortium will deliver a proven, efficient, highly reliable, and modern smartcard ticketing system. The new system will be able to support evolving payment technologies including mobile phones and credit cards."

The Pearl Consortium comprises Cubic Transportation Sydney (Australia), Downer EDI and the Commonwealth Bank.

NSW's new electronic ticketing system will operate across greater Sydney's public transport network and will extend as far as Newcastle and the Hunter region, as well as Wollongong and the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains and will be based on the MyZone fare structure.
