JR East to introduce 'super first class' on bullet trains


An existing model of the bullet train on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line.East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) is set to introduce "super-green cars," equivalent to first class on international flights, on its Tohoku Shinkansen Line bullet trains, company officials said.

JR East intends to initially connect such luxurious carriages to only three of its bullet trains using new-model cars when the Tohoku Shinkansen Line is extended beyond Hachinohe Station in Aomori Prefecture to Shin-Aomori Station at the end of the 2010 business year. It will then increase the number of trains with super-green cars.

Super-green cars will be more luxurious than existing green cars.

The new-model bullet trains that are being developed are designed to travel at a maximum of 320 kilometers per hour. However, they will be initially operated at lower speeds. Their maximum speed will be raised to 320 kilometers per hour by 2013.

The new style of Shinkansen they are testing at the moment is a very weird looking one. Currently in the Prototype stages, it is currently named the Fastech 360 (S and Z Models). The final product of this train will include the Super Green Car. The Prototype does run around, however I did not see it when I was there however. Photos are from the site Byun Byun Shinkansen.

In 2011, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) is planning to introduce a revolutionary idea in comfort on its Hayate trains operating between Tokyo and Aomori along the Tohoku Shinkansen line. The ?Super Green? cars, now in development as Series E5, will offer a new level of luxury for the first class rail traveler. There will be one ?Super Green? car on each Hayate train offering seating for only 18 pampered passengers, compared with the present Green car seating for 51 people. The following are some of the other proposed features of this new design:

A seating arrangement of three seats across (one and two on each side of the aisle) will replace the present four-seat arrangement giving wider seats and more aisle space.
The comfortable and restful seats will recline automatically a full 45 degrees. A movable partition can separate the two adjacent seats for greater privacy. Each seat will have its own reading light and foot rest.
In addition to the seating, the overall ambience of the ?Super Green? car will feature soothing lighting and the latest technology for maintaining a quiet and well-ventilated space.
The ?Super-Green? Car will have its own attendant to see to passengers? needs including serving beverages and light snacks.
