Beard.

Yes.

Seriously.

Quote
Canberra's newest industrial suburb will be named Beard after a pioneering convict.

The 45 hectares of land, located next to Oakes Estate will be named in honour of Timothy Beard who settled in the Canberra and Monaro area during the early 1800s.

Historian Lenore Coltheart says the convict turned land owner had humble beginnings.

"He didn't have children when he came to Australia all of that came later as he prospered and his family grew but it is an extraordinary story, it tells us also how money was made at the time," she said.

Ms Coltheart says Beard started a new life when he arrived from Europe.

"Timothy Beard then with his stock and his station moved up on to the Monaro he had a permanent station up there," she said.

"It's an amazing story from very difficult beginnings and it's really nice that this industrial suburb is going to commemorate Timothy Beard."
