YAMAGATA -- A man here died after falling from a station platform and being hit by a bullet train, police said.

Local police are unsure whether the fall was accidental or suicide, and are still trying to confirm his identity.

At around 10:10 p.m. on Friday, the young man fell onto the tracks of the JR Ou Line at Kita-Yamagata Station in Yamagata and was hit by the Tsubasa No. 129 superexpress bound for Shinjo from Tokyo, which was passing through the station, local police said.

He was killed instantly. None of the 160 or so passengers and crew aboard the train was injured.

Following the accident, an Ou Line local train was cancelled and six others were delayed by up to 94 minutes, affecting about 500 passengers, East Japan Railway Co. officials said.

Todd's Trivia

The Tsubasa service is a Mini-Shinkansen (Meaning it runs on conventional rail lines when away from normal shikanses tracks, and has level crossings). The trains are the 400 series Shinkansen, and will be retired from December 2008 with a new batch of E3 trains.
