Title: Bus Stop Modifications
Post by: Bus 400 on August 22, 2010, 06:17:45 PM
Recently a few bus stops around Canberra have had work done to them, these include the stops on Hoskins Street & on Flemington Road, Mitchell receiving an actual pad to full scale changes as has occurred on Summerland Circuit, Kambah.

The only difference to the Kambah stop is that is a lot of it has to be redone. You see, one of these stops received an upgrade that include a ramp & stair access to the pad, but also a grab rail & nice stone work. But after only being in operation for a week this stop was fenced off & the new work ripped up. Sadly I didn't get a photo of what a bus stop should look like, but below are the aftermaths.

(https://www.actbus.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi611.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt193%2FBus400%2FInfrastructure%2F_DSC3155.jpg&hash=445c132ea8b93c1dbc9ccec2ce645cfc86991c7d)

The stop opposite has also had a bit of work done to it:

(https://www.actbus.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi611.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt193%2FBus400%2FInfrastructure%2F_DSC3158.jpg&hash=d13dcd84708ae25e9ac2417b1bc5024286d0df7e)

What also doesn't help it that the next set of stops up (Woden bound) are having work done around them with a power box thingy being replaced & all the pedestrains have to devaite a little & the stop that is normally hard for bus drivers to see is now that little bit harder to see.

My stop is in a similar condition, no work has been done on it since early July and it is really giving me the shits, I am starting to get sick of waiting for the bus in the mud every time it rains.

Nullabor/Flemington Rd Redex stop southbound has had a minor upgrade in recent weeks but still pretty makeshift and crude...

There are still many stops in the ACT (Especially the newer suburbs) where the facilities are poor. Alot of the newer stops consist of a pole in the earth, some stops have had a seat provided but only concreted the seat base and not provided a pad (The link between the footpath and the roadway from the seat is normally dirt). Most of these are stops which have been moved due safety concerns, or are in newer suburbs *cough*Gungahlin*cough*.

I would enquire as to why this particular stop was completed, then ripped up not long after. I would try to find out what the problem is as that is a huge waste of money that could've been spent on another bus stop.

There is also a letter to Editor in today's Sunday Canberra Times about this same stop & about how no wonder TAMS overspends its budget with work like this.

Some Government boss replied to the Letter to the Editor about my bus stop. Apparently the contractor stuffed up (again) & the contractor had to pay for the work to be redone. Work on the stop looks done & appears that barely anything has changed. I'll try & photograph the stop before it is ripper up again.

On a side note, the last stop on National Circuit (Woden bound) has been ripped up & looks like an upgrade is under way.

Below is a photo of the completed bus stop.

The big issue was over there being a second step that was 5-10cm high.

Southbound inner lane of Northbourne Ave closed yesterday, mid afternoon to allow installation of new Adshel outside Block 17, Northbourne Flats.

New one has also just gone in at the Market (Fyshwick), northbound.

No doubt, DFO will justify one soon; traffic to/from DFO on the 200s is quite encouraging.

Many bus stops around the ACTION Network are having u shaped bicycle poles installed.

The below lists are of bus stops which are to receive shelters under the latest tender, the shelters that are connected to mains supply are to have the provision for real time bus information made available. The shelters powered by solar panels do not need to have this feature.

What's with the grocer's apostrophe (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=grocer%27s+apostrophe)?

Do they not bother teaching English at school, or do you just not pay attention?

In other news, more stops in Kambah are being upgraded.

Also the stops on Captain Cook Crescent (Manuka shops) are being upgraded. Now it appears that the Woden bound stop is being moved back a few hundred metres. This would then allow the Route 6 to stop here.

Athllon Drive, Torrens Adshel 'superstop' is very close to commissioning; appears that what I thought would be a module for real time monitors turns out to be an extra advertising panel.

Regrettably, shelter offers very little protection from summer western sun or winds and rainy squalls from the east. But a reasonable amount of seating - good. Let's hope they're timber seats so you can sit on them in winter without freezing your vital parts off.

Spotted a few stops in West Kambah having work done last week.

Both stops on Kambah Pool Road were having concrete laid, possibly for AdShel/CAM shelters (which would mean removal of the northbound bunker)

The other stop was on Boddington Crescent northbound between Crozier and Castley. Not sure if a shelter is planned for this stop but from memory it's not a particularly busy one.

The stops on Hoskins Street near Pelle Street (Mitchell) were recently moved closer to Well Station Drive. Well the southbound stop is being moved & appears to be taking a whole line of car park spaces. It also looks to be getting a shelter.
While I know many a Franklin resident takes the 56 & jumps off on this stop, they have for years & still do. I am yet to see one catch the 56 to the City from Mitchell though.
Back in the old days, passengers would jump on a Belconnen bound 56 as it had a better connection time from when they finished work & a few passengers said that to the regular driver I was with (not a forum member).

Several bus stops in Duffy are being upgraded at present although none involve new shelters (at this stage).

Clunies Ross Street southbound stop has been relocated (again) - from outside CSIRO to a location closer to Barry Drive (close to where it was originally located prior to the Barry Drive Transitway works commencing). In December last year, a new northbound stop on Clunies Ross Street was created close to the Botanical Gardens entrance; this is in addition to the northbound stop near CSIRO Black Mountain.

Barton Interchange southbound AdShel now sports an orange name hat similar to that applied to the northbound stop.

My Tuggeranong bound stop on Summerland Circuit in Kambah looks to be about to be upgraded.

I just hope they don't touch for gutter. As when it rains, the water builds up & as buses (& some car drivers) drive past at speed. A wave of water soaks unsuspecting people exiting the underpass near by.

Just noticed on the ACTION website, the Barry Dr stop (westbound) is being relocated for 4 weeks starting tomorrow.

Perhaps, finally, this stop is being upgraded. A medium/large shelter would be desirable.

Some trees (or vegetation at best) next to the footpath have been cut down. They appear to have cleared sufficient room for a large AdShel / CAM shelter. But based on what's been fenced off, other landscaping / water course improvements may also be done.

The article you have but up on facebook about bus stop upgrades in Fadden and Wanniassa is quite exciting... unless... I went to my bus stop this morning and found that some small sections of the concrete had whiter concrete spread over it, maybe filling some cracks or something that I never knew existed, and lots of solidified drips of concrete everywhere. Is this it? I was hoping for something better... maybe even a shelter  :-\

Sounds like they've smoothed down some uneven joins in the pavement. Whether that's the extent of the work at your stop is dependant on whether or not it is already accessible.

Stop work complete, yes. The toilet facilities were delivered early last week and they've been digging trenches (for pipes) since.
Even still, buses tend to like to layover further up Box Hill or at the southbound Tharwa Dr stop before Box Hill...that might change once the toilets are in service I guess.

Under the new network many bus stations have been renamed or existing names adjusted. Comparing the names from old and new bus books:-

City Bus Station became City Interchange;
Belconnen Community Bus Station became Belconnen Interchange;
Westfield (Belconnen) Bus Station became Westfield Belconnen;
Cohen St (Belconnen) Bus Station became Cohen St Interchange;
Woden Bus Station became Woden Interchange;
Tuggeranong Bus Station became Tuggeranong Interchange;
Gungahlin Town  Centre became Gungahlin Place;
Continuing unchanged is Dickson Interchange.

Interesting, as has been mentioned, there are inconsistencies in the application of 'Interchange' in the naming. Notably at Gungahlin where, though the name applies to both bus and light rail, 'Interchange' is omitted; two interchanges at Belconnen; and the City light rail terminus not indicated as an 'Interchange'.

(A recent post used an old name, so I thought it might be useful to list all the names in one place.)

I had confined my post to the locations diagrammed in the Time Table books.

It is more than Barton, there other 'bus stations' and 'interchanges' including (not a comprehensive search):
- Eastern Valley Way Bus Station;
- Kippax Interchange;
- Cooleman Court Interchange;
- Erindale Interchange.

There are inconsistencies between on-line indexing, on-line detail, printable on-line version, and the books. Erindale is either a centre or interchange depending where you look; Eastern Valley Way Bus Station seems only to appear as an outbound departure point for some  Belconnen local services (eg 42) in the on-line detail with Belconnen Interchange being the outbound departure point in other sources. Emu Bank Bus Station seems to have disappeared.

Yet another source of inconsistencies.

Transport Canberra in its major overhaul of the network (and the 3 month postponement of the new network) had a golden opportunity to fix up inconsistencies and some longstanding problems (like the panels sometimes not showing the current service approaching, indicating incorrect platforms, etc) but appear to have muffed it.

At the end of the day the naming of a location as an interchange, bus station etc. is meaningless to the general public who won't look past the first word/name of the place, unless they're asking/telling someone where they're going and confirming such as, "dose this bus go to the city"...."where in the city"...."the interchange"...."yes" I do agree it is annoying and should be consistent, whilst I was never for the change to bus station, they should have made all the bus ONLY stations 'Bus Stations' and should've made City and Gungahlin Interchanges and called the Light Rail Stops the same name, such as they have correctly done at Dickson.

At this stop Monday morning. Several signs had been posted but were incorrectly worded. The wording suited posting at the temporary stop not at the stop being temporarily closed.

Effectively, the signs told the public that the stop replaced stop 5520 (ie the stop replaced itself) and advised about commencing services departing from the Belconnen Interchange. There was no guidance to the temporary stop, so the impression likely to be received would be that work was being done at the stop, so some services had been moved to the Interchange; or,  if the stop number was not noticed on the blade, that the stop was standing in for another stop elsewhere.

Today, on an R3 I noticed a person was allowed to board and was 'chipped' by the driver to use the temporary stop next time. If the signs are still the same (which I haven't had an opportunity to check) then it is valid, based on the advice in the signs, to expect R and other passing services to stop.

Westfield (Belconnen) Bus Station became Westfield Belconnen;
Cohen St (Belconnen) Bus Station became Cohen St Interchange;
Woden Bus Station became Woden Interchange;
Tuggeranong Bus Station became Tuggeranong Interchange;
Gungahlin Town  Centre became Gungahlin Place;

Personally in my opinion I feel like they should've left most of them as bus stations, and Erindale as Erindale Centre and Tuggeranong as Tuggeranong bus station as a few examples, But what I think they really should've renamed,is But what I think they really should've renamed is City bus station/city interchange, aa City bus station/city interchange as "City Transit Center" or "Civic Transit Center" As You have nearly almost all forms of transport excluding the train but you have connections to everywhere from Gungahlin to Eden, from Melbourne to Sydney So it would make more sense for the city bus station to be known as the city transit Centre in has multiple forms of transport and transport agencies are within a 500 meter range of platforms one and two/T1 & T2 And plus they should've renamed the platforms for the tram as platform one and two in the same fashion as Gungahlin where tram and bus platforms are part of the same Station area (Gungahlin station)

I still live in hope that they will decide to build a new bus interchange underground in the city with escalators up to the light rail stop and Jolimont centre, leaving Brisbane style underground busways for TC/CDC Routes and platforms, this would allow Northbourne to flow continuously with passengers forced to cross underneath the road and allowing the whole current interchange to be converted to pedestrian space and hence re-activating the city.

But it's Canberra and everyone is against building anything underground or having tunnels so it won't ever happen.

Imagine how long it would take too, the whole area would have to be shut down for a decade xD
