The ACT Government is extending Braybrooke Street in Bruce to cater for a new residential and commercial front planned for the area, Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope, said today.

Mr Stanhope said work had commenced on the $4.5 million extension of Braybrooke Street to Battye Street, with the awarding of the contract for the work to Group One.

The extension replaces the current gravel road and will be completed in June 2010.

"The ACT Government is extending Braybrooke Street to open up an important new development front in Bruce," Mr Stanhope said.

"The Land Development Agency expects to release a mix of sites in Bruce over the next 12 months that could house up to 400 residential dwellings.

"The new road will provide a southern entrance to these estates and cater for the expected increase in traffic."

Mr Stanhope said the road would also improve access to the Australian Institute of Sport and the nearby Canberra stadium.

"The extension will help to ease the flow of traffic to the neighbouring Australian Institute of Sport and to the car parks used by the Canberra Stadium for large sporting events. Braybrooke Street provides access to the majority of car parking areas on the western side of the Canberra Stadium," he said.

Mr Stanhope said the first stage of Braybrooke Street (and Paget Street) was constructed in 2005 to open up residential development in central Bruce.

Braybrooke Street will eventually become the main entrance to the AIS.
