STANHOPE SIGNALS START OF MCCUBBIN HOME SITES

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has turned the first sod to signal the start of construction of McCubbin Rise - the first residential development in the suburb of North Weston in the Molonglo Valley.

"North Weston offers an outstanding living environment with its proximity to the city centre and its environmental design principles" Mr Stanhope said.

In 2006, the Molonglo Valley Structure Plan was awarded an Urban Planning Achievement Award. The judging panel said the plan encapsulated a " 'new urbanism' approach aimed at promoting a sustainable and compact design within Molonglo Valley that not only reduced energy consumption and travel times, but also fostered a strong sense of community".

McCubbin Rise is the first major project in Molonglo Valley, and therefore Canberra, where all standard residential sites will meet a 5 star energy rating and where buyers are referred to architects specialising in the design of energy efficient homes.
Future Development, a consortium of local builders, bought the land for $11.7 million at auction in June last year and plans to build 102 homes.

Mr Stanhope said while some builders have purchased lots for house and land packages, the developers have also sought to provide blocks to individual home buyers.

"Most buyers are individuals seeking to build their dream home in North Weston," he said. "To date, 49 of the 82 standard residential blocks have already been sold."

In line with the ACT Government's Affordable Housing Action Plan, 16 of the new homes will be mandated as affordable housing.
The ACT Government continues to embark on a major program of land releases, and specifically in the Molonglo Valley.

"In this week's 2010-2011 Budget, the ACT Government announced its plan to release a record 17,000 dwelling sites over the next four years and invest over $70 million in capital and $15 million in recurrent funding to support the release of land.

"We are investing heavily in infrastructure to support the release of land in the Molonglo Valley over the next two years, including $55 million in capital works and $900,000 in recurrent funding for feasibility studies," Mr Stanhope said.

McCubbin Rise has been named in honour of the renowned Australian artist Frederick McCubbin.

Was scared for a moment that McCubbin was going to be a suburb name for Molonglo. *shudder*

Wow, sixteen! What a huge investment in affordable housing!

No doubt they'll be snapped up by those who could afford something much more substantial before anybody with a genuine need for an affordable home for an entry into the market can even take a look at the plans.

To nitpick :
(A) North Weston is not a suburb.
(B) North Weston is not in the Molonglo Valley district. None of the resources on the ACT Gov website are definitive, although some documents refer to "North Weston & Molonglo" (which means they're separate).
(C) Recently it's being called Molonglo Valley, but the Territory Plan always refers to it as just Molonglo.
