Game fans flocked to consumer electronics stores across Japan on Saturday, drawn by the launch of the new multi-functional "Nintendo DSi."

Priced at a recommended 18,900 yen, the Nintendo DSi, the newest installation in the popular DS series -- following the Nintendo DS (released in December 2004) and the DS Lite (March 2006) -- is creating excitement among fans over its new built-in camera functions.

Photographs taken with the camera can be played with in ways such as changing facial expressions with the device's stylus pen, and making composite pictures using photographs of two people's faces. Users can also play music saved on a memory card in the new game console.

Some 400 people were waiting in line to buy the Nintendo DSi in front of the Bic Camera main store in Tokyo's Ikebukuro from early Saturday morning. Just under half an hour before the store opened, it began selling the game consoles at a special counter set up in front of the central entrance.

"I can't wait to play around with the DSi, like taking photos of my family," said a 12-year-old elementary school student from Tokyo's Adachi-ku, who came to the store with his father.
