Title: Bus advertising discussion
Post by: Busnerd on November 23, 2009, 06:47:49 PM
I found an error on ACTIONs website. It says on their website that if you wish to advertise on ACTION buses then contact APN Outdoor....oops, someone forgot to tell them it's now Bus Advertising.

I think you got the wrong section, lol.

ACTION rarely update their site, they had the specs sheet for the  Scanias saying that the last one was BUS 362 up until late last year.

As I write this, I'm sitting behind 870 - it has the 'BCC Rocks' ad on the back window. Good that BCC have different ads. But the BCC Rocks ad is not good.

There seems to be a fair few BCC ads around at the moment, haven't gotten a good look at any of them yet though

As I mentioned on twitter earlier, I spotted what appeared to be a new version of the "Give Way to Buses" ads.

I was a distance away but it was on an LED Scania. The ad featured an illustrated ACTION Bus (something with the green/orange livery) as well as a give way sign (but with more than just "Give Way" on the sign).

That ad has been applied to a few Irisbuses tonight.

Would this be that ad?

The other one is nearly as bad, fuck those kids look like losers. I think the message they are trying to send is, "all you dweebs come to BCC where you won't get bullied by the mini-bogans [but will have to put up with endless blather about their imaginary friend the sky bully*]"

*AKA God in case anyone didn't figure that out.

"The other one"- there are (at last count) FOUR other ones. The "jumping in the air" ad is the one that's nearly as bad; the rest are passable.

987 is now sporting one of the aforementioned large Subway ads on its left hand side.

And don't know how new these are, but saw a .2 with a Canberra Times advert on its right side tonight.

I saw a Mk1 Artic with the Subway ad (well it had a sandwich on it) on it's left hand side this morning, I was too far away and driving in the wet to get a bus number.

I know that 704 and 988 have got them (the Subway ads that is). I haven't yet checked if they are all the same or if each one has a different sub on them.

The Canberra Times ad is on 959 (and most likely others). It's been there for a few weeks.

There is also a Tuggeranong MkI artic, possibly 719/721? Metrobus may have better memory than I do on the matter!

Thanks for the info there, 'MyWay', hopefully, this ad type will be more widespread, as it takes full advantage of the avaliable space on the bus.

I saw bus 720 with a subway add on it ... going along the parkway this arvo at about 430-445.

I didn't get a good look at it cos I was driving, but It looked a bit like it was stamped on, and didn't flow?

How very appropriate :P

And yeah, I think 720 was the one Metro and I saw, not sure......

BTW, if you mean how they are applied, I think this one is see through vinyl, as it is placed on windows, similar to that ad on the side of 898, and a few others.....I think.

They have before, many moons ago. It was a MAN SG192 in State Rail Intercity XPT Livery. I would say the cost of doing up an artic in vinyl would be too expensive for alot of companies to afford, or more than they would want to spend.

I Did see a good three MkI's with the new Advert at Tuggeranong when I passed on Tuesday.

AOA's are a bit hard really - obviously they can only really do them when a company decides they want to a) take the 'all over' option and b) do it in Canberra.

Special Liveries, on the other hand, is something that we used to have a lot of, mainly for our national institutions (Questacon, War Memorial, Film and Sound Archives), and for community service kinda things (Recycling, Driver Safety, Human Rights Office). It would be great to see this sort of thing happen again.

I thought the patches of orange/blue "stickers" covering up the missing paint on the Renaults was bad enough, but 791 now has white patches on its right hand side.

I've found the answer. The Bus Advertising contract (http://www.procurement.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/268378/Services_Contractor_Agreement_-_2011.16141.210.pdf) (from the ACT Procurement website) includes a clause which does not allow any advertisement that "demeans or discourages the use of public transport" (among other things).

I seriously have to wonder about the contract with 'Bus Advertising'. I can only assume that they charge less for what they do than APN Outdoor used to, because why else would you sign a contract with them?

APN Outdoor may have been more expensive but have a think about the volume of advertisements. Under APN, essentially EVERY Renault had advertisements on every side of the bus. Now a solid percentage of them are ad-less and that's lost revenue.

It would seem a lot of revenue is being missed out on. APN can obviously bring those 'national' campaigns to Canberra. Since BA has had the contract, we've had very few of those and an awful lot of awful local campaigns.  Interior advertising has all but disappeared too - most Renaults used to be full of ads from front to back on both sides.

Internal ads for Palace Electric cinema have started to appear in the MANs (as well as ads on the back windows).

But yeah, national advertisers are sadly lacking. Subway is the only one I can think of (and those ads would probably be paid for by the local franchisees).

Correct, only saw they were for the NBN. I don't think an ad is that good if you have to be up close to know what it is about. Most ad's you see on the buses you know straight away what they are specially advertising & then you walk up to it for more information.

Has anyone else realised that, besides large format ads, the "orange" fleet is almost entirely ad-free on the sides? The Drink or Drive campaign may be the only small side ads left.

Bus Advertising was bought out by Go Transit late last year - http://www.busadvertising.com.au/_blog/The_Bus_Blog/post/go-transit-announces-massive-expansion/

Maybe they can attract some more advertisers. The Renaults look pretty shabby without advertising, particularly the ones with the orange or blue vinyl stickers covering up the paint damage.

Is this the new trend in advertising? 395 now features large-scale ads on all 3 sides, for 3 different advertisers. (The Tradies Club is now joining the clubs ad war.)

521 now adorns a Maccas ad (for its monopoly thing) on the door-side around the upsweep of orange. It does cover windows too. First Scania artic for this sort of advertising? (I know 508 has an AOA and 525 has a drawing on the back).

Yep, no 'standard' adverts on any of the new artics before. Just the AOAs on 508 and the dream bus contest winner.

Add 520, 522, 526 as well as a couple of STAG's (i think one was 479...). Probably more though. Interesting to see artic advertising coming back (it was inevitable though to be honest!)

A cynic could suggest that the ads have been placed on artics to ensure they are being seen by school kids. But I would never suggest such a thing.

Also think these are the first side ads on the Scania 14.5s

With the ACT Govt's efforts to discourage the consumption of junk foods in schools, makes you wonder whether these Maccas advertising plugs on ACTION buses are sending out an inconsistent message.

The McDonalds ads do not breach the rules and therefore the Government / ACTION has no power to restrict or remove them. I am more concerned about alcohol and gambling advertising than questionable food advertising.

Agree with you that junk food ads don't breach any rules, but as owner and operator of the buses, I'd be surprised if the government didn't have any sanction over the content of adverts that appear on its buses.

Fleet wiki has been updated to include reported / known advertising changes, but it is far from complete (given how many ads there are at the moment).

So if you want to report more ads: note them here, send me a PM, send a message to ACT Bus on facebook, post a photo to facebook (or in a facebook message) or use the "contact us (http://actbus.net/contact-act-bus)" form.

The Europe holiday expo and Maccas monopoly ads were not included in the update since these ads have been, or are about to be, removed. New McDonald's ads have appeared this week on STAGs and artics, but can't be sure if it's the same vehicles as previously reported.

It wasn't when I walked past it, one side was ad free, the others had C5 all over it, but an honest thought was that it was a half baked job and the bus had to leave for its next run from the depot before they had finished the AOA.... Well not really AOA at the moment.

Should've been pretty easy to tell - did the nearside ad cover the entire side of the bus, or did it cover from after the front doors to almost the rear?

I've seen buses go out with half an ad before, so it could be possible that it was an unfinished AOA I guess.

Yesterday at about 4:10 pm in the city. Was going to take a few shots but the bus left before I could.

Should've been pretty easy to tell - did the nearside ad cover the entire side of the bus, or did it cover from after the front doors to almost the rear?

I've seen buses go out with half an ad before, so it could be possible that it was an unfinished AOA I guess.

Covered the entire bus... but the other side of the bus was blank.

Differently styled Quest Care ad.

Origen energy are now advertising on a few new scanias (side ads) with Oporto a small side advert too.

375 has an interior ad for the Green Army on the inside, top of the driver side window beside luggage racks. First time I have seen an interior ad of that style (or any ad inside a green bus)

948 has a new ad for oporto on the right, one of the square ones like the ones showing up on some of the MANs. I believe this is the first new ad to be applied on a orange bus for some time (ignoring the BCC ones) and the first of its style on a orange bus

I've seen it in some MAN before - it looked no different to any other inside-bus advert though.

Meanwhile in a planet far away, someone at RiotACT is having a rant about 442's very descriptive righthand side ad. http://the-riotact.com/who-is-harry-and-why-does-he-love-gardens-action-bus-ad/154983

I'm talking on the interior of the window itself, rather than the grey plastic

Same thing has appeared in 380.

I think it works well, and would like to see the Fare stickers are applied on the window next time around (in the "green buses" anyway - the Renaults should continue where they are).

I've seen an all-over-side ad on Euro 5 bus 390, which is strange, cause I thought with 390 being the bus with all the special little MAN stickers all over it, that it would never had ads on it, oh well...

Can I ask, what does AOA stand for? i understand it's to do with the ads, but i can't find the definition anywhere.

On 390, you'll find that it is in Australian National University AOA (at least the last time I checked it was in AOA) so all the sides have advertisements as well as the back of the bus. The MAN stickers that recognise it is the first euro 5 stickers are at least still on the back of the bus. You can see them from inside the bus itself. The stickers are likely to be ripped off if they are in poor condition (I would think.)

What does AOA stand for? I understand it means All Over Advertisement.

On the subject of 390 and stickers, why was it that 374 never received any?

New restrictions are coming into place for junk food ads etc. I suppose this means there'll be no more maccas, oporto, subway, and half the bus ads. Refer here for more info:

Quick!! Someone get a photo of 948's ad before it disappears!

Things is though, Oporto and McDonald's have paid for a contract on the buses so they will be ripped off if they get taken off before the due date.

Extra ad-on: The news about the new advertising laws reveals the fact that the promotion of fossil fuels will no longer be allowed as adverts on buses either. But I believe that 963, 967 and 971's taking action liveries will be safe because they encourage fossil fuels to be conserved.

There is now a new Scania which has a right hand side advertisement for STAR WARS.

I wonder what will happen to the Gaspods which have ACTEWAGL stickers. They don't directly advertise fossil fuels, but ACTEWAGL are a gas and electrics company.

Not actually FOR Star Wars - it's a Bags to Go ad. I assume there's a Star Wars range of baggage.

Just wondering about the Right ad on 442, it says

"Harry [picture of a dog] loves gardens"

and gives no indication what its advertising or the company/ organisation it is advertising for...
any ideas?
While (at last sighting) the ad on 442 remains unchanged, there is a new side ad on 318 which has both "Harry Loves Gardens" and Willow Park Nursery.

So there's your answer, finally.

Go Transit have been awarded the new advertising contract for the following 3 years.

Nothing really new in the contract, except this time 20 buses must be kept clean. Plus City Loop & trial buses are to remain ad free.

In other news, a new ad for 104.7 is coming this year.

Not sure I have great news there, an advertising company recently contacted ACT BUS asking for photos of the rear ends of the Volgrens, so they may be coming soon!

The bustech rear ad wouldn't look so bad if they stickered over the hinges as well as the blank circles where the school lights go.

Well I got 647 today parked next to a Renault with an ad too.
Tbh I don't mind the ads on them myself, adds a little something to the boring-ass livery they have, it's just sucky they have to have massive images of peoples faces, ruins it a little.

Well it didn't take them long! Just saw 658 with a rear TC ad (probably the same as the bustechs). Only a brief look but I'm glad to say that even with an ad the volgrens retain their beauty. Unlike the bustechs which are hideous to start and become worse with ads!
