Sydney's network of high-frequency red Metrobuses is to be expanded. Eight new routes will be rolled out in the next year to service suburbs in the city's west, north, north-west, south and south-west.

The first - which has been fast tracked to start on August 8 - will run between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, via Victoria Road.

It comes with Labor's popularity suffering in western Sydney.

Transport Minister John Robertson said the Parramatta Metrobus service would provide an extra 40,000 "passenger spaces" per week.

He said the service would "provide a big increase in bus capacity for families in Drummoyne and surrounding suburbs who head to work in the city and Parramatta each day".

He was careful to give some credit for the new route to Drummoyne MP, Angela D'Amore.

Her seat, which she holds by 7.6 per cent, is being targeted by the Coalition at next year's state election.

The other new routes announced today are:

M41 – between Hurstville and Macquarie via Burwood.

M52 – between Parramatta and Sydney CBD via West Ryde.

M54 – between Parramatta and Macquarie via Epping.

M60 – between Parramatta and Hornsby via Baulkham Hills.

M61 – between Castle Hill and Sydney CBD via Baulkham Hills.

M90 – between Liverpool and Burwood via Bankstown.

M91 – between Hurstville and Parramatta via Bankstown.

M92 – between Sutherland and Parramatta via Bankstown.

The 2004 Unsworth inquiry into buses gave rise to the network and the new routes, to be rolled out over 12 months.

There are already four Metrobus routes in operation: Leichhardt to Maroubra Junction; Gore Hill to Mascot; Mosman to Sydenham; and Chatswood to Bondi Junction.

The fifth of the previously announced routes, between Drummoyne and Randwick via Sydney CBD, was due to start in October, Mr Robertson said.

The new routes are estimated to provide an extra 400,000 additional bus passenger spaces a week.

The government says more than 4.5 million passengers have caught a Metrobus since they were introduced in late 2008.

This is a move in the right direction, a high frequency service operating all across Sydney, it's fantastic. Hopefully, all the operational issues will be able to be solved on a case by case matter for the gradual launch of this massive network.

The M52 is remarkably similar to the 520/L20. I wonder if they'll both survive its introduction?

At least the 40 was different enough to the 200 between Bondi Junction and Chatswood to warrant both services being retained.

Metrobuses are additional services on busy routes and cross regional areas that didnt have links before.

They are ADDITIONAL, no other services will be cancelled

The Media Release for the new network includes the following statement: ""The expanded Metrobus network is a mix of new routes, and upgrades of existing routes where there is demand for more frequent, higher capacity services," Mr Robertson said."

So to me that sounds like, in some way, some existing routes may be converted to Metrobus services.

Well, I hate to say I told you so, but... http://www.sydneybuses.info/news/371/234.htm  :P

Of course, the actual number of services is greatly increasing, but it's ta ta to the L20.

It's just a play on words actually, it will replace the L20 which is a daytime only service but the 520 will remain for those hours where metrobus doesnt operate i.e. after 8pm...

This may mean extra capacity for customers howevcer it means longer trip times as their limited stops route is replaced by an all stops service.

The M52 has the same stopping pattern as the L20 - see the brochure on the SB website. It's just a renumbering of the L20 and expanded to seven days a week at a higher frequency and is not PrePay like the other Metrobuses. Will be interesting to see what happens with the 520 on a Sunday - the M52 would certainly cover the current capacity west of Ryde, but not in the all stops section east of it.
