Work is about commence on extending City Bus Station along Alinga St (between Northbourne & West Row). This will also involve converting the existing Alinga St stops at Canberra House to on-street parking.

Quote from: Media Release
Work expands on Sunday 4 November to connect the signature light rail stop with an extended City Bus Station along Alinga Street West.

By getting the City Bus Station extension underway now we will be ready for the new transport network in 2019, with light rail and more frequent bus services in a modern interchange.

The first construction activity on Alinga Street is planned to take place on the quietest day of trade, Sunday 4 November. Road crews will repair the road surface to make it ready for new line marking.

Parking spots will remain in place on Alinga Street as sign posted until 17 November when new five minute spots will open on the block between Moore and Marcus Clarke Streets, close to Australia Post, the Jolimont Centre and the ACT Health Clinic.

Buses will begin operating from Alinga Street West on Saturday 17 November.

Location and timing of construction works

Works are planned to be carried out from Sunday 4 November to January 2019 on Alinga Street between Northbourne Avenue and Marcus Clarke Street. Additional works will be undertaken in mid 2019 to install bus shelters that meet the heritage requirements of the area.

Well, they didn't commence use this week. Signage on Alinga St says parking will be permitted until Friday.

The two new stops appear to be 3418 & 3419. The existing Alinga St stops (Canberra House / ACT Health) have been retained, but reduced in size.

[Update] Based on Google Maps, all ACT Health stop routes will move to #3418 (GPO). Stop #3419 will be the same as #3404 (Platform 3). Unsure whether #3042 (Canberra House) will change.

Opens on Sunday, apparently.

Interestingly route 3 is not listed as stopping at stop 3042 in the above list (yet 934 is shown).

And unsure of the need for this, but routes 765, 767 and 775 seem stop at City Bus Station Plt 3, then Plt 12, then terminate on the other side of West Row at Stop 3042. Either they just copied and pasted the data from the Plt 3 departures list or maybe they actually do stop there for some reason (though, they managed to remove the 712 and 714 from the route list, as well as the 717, which I have to presume is an error).

Hoping there is an updated bus station map to go with this for those who cbf looking up stop numbers

At least one of the new City stops is causing serious problems. The stop in question is the in bound stop in Alinga St between Moore St and Northbourne Ave (relocated from near ACT Health).

The marked bus stop terminates a couple of car lengths from Northbourne Ave. Between it and the Northbourne Ave stop line the kerbside lane is coloured asphalt usually used to mark a bus lane but not lettered/signed so.

Observed this morning, left turning drivers were confused. Some entered the 'bus'  lane and some turned left from the lane next to the 'bus' lane. The bus I was on when ready to leave the stop had a clear 'bus' lane, but a left turning car was waiting next to the 'bus' lane at the stop line. The bus eased forward to the stop line. When the lights turned green the car turned straight across the front of the bus! Fortunately the bus driver was alert to that happening. A very unsafe arrangement.

Later, waiting at the stop I observed two buses proceed straight ahead past cars queueing to turn. Quite plainly, the bus drivers would have then been unable to enter the stop if signalled. (The decision point was far enough back to coincide with 'destination' readable distance for anyone with compromised vision.)

The scene about 5.45pm this evening. Cars turning left occupying the bus lane and held back by pedestrians crossing. The car queue not clearing thus trapping the buses at the stop. The bus queue filled the stop and then the road lane back towards Moore St thus making the road unusable and causing congestion problems at the Moore/Alinga Sts intersection. Quite a shemozzle.

I find it hard to believe that any competent traffic engineer was responsible for the arrangements for this stop.
