Residents of the Kangara Waters Retirement Village will soon benefit from road safety upgrades to the busy Aikman Drive and Joy Cummins Place intersection in Belconnen, with works scheduled to start in the coming months, Chief Minister and Minister for Transport Jon Stanhope announced today.

Mr Stanhope said the works were in response to concerns first raised by residents from the Kangara Waters Retirement Village last year.
He said the Government had responded to the concerns by undertaking a review of the intersection, which recommended traffic lights to improve access to Joy Cummings Place and to provide a safe pedestrian crossing on Aikman Drive.

"The ACT Government is responding to concerns raised by the community about the safety of this busy intersection by installing new traffic lights," Mr Stanhope said. "The lights will make it easier for vehicles to turn right into and out of Joy Cummings Place and provide a safe pedestrian crossing to the bus stop on Aikman Drive.

"The traffic lights will be installed next year and funded through the Government's 2010/11 Capital works program.

"In the interim, I have asked RoadsACT to undertake some more immediate road safety works including new line markings and road signs.

"I believe these works will be welcomed by road users and the residents of the Kangara Waters Retirement Village who regularly cross Aikman Drive to catch a bus.

"Across the ACT the ACT Government is undertaking a number of road works to improve the safety of our roads, reduce congestion and provide more attractive alternatives to driving the car."

The Government will invest $20,000 for the initial road safety improvements as part of the minor works program with work to start in the coming months.

A further $300,000 will be provided for the traffic lights through the 2010/11 Capital works program.

He said the works would be consistent with the Government's planned upgrade of the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Aikman Drive as part of the development of Lawson in 2010/2011.
