Sir Pompously

Well I have been looking at all this kind of stuff over the past few days. My way would be 800-899 as Sightseeing services and 900's are Special Events services which are all pre-timetabled and do not change.
Quote
800-849 ? Tourist Loop and Sightseeing ? Stops only at Specially Signposted Stops
Tourist Loops will have a $7 Sightseeing Daily ticket which allows travellers on any bus, any where including Sightseeing services. It will be a flat rate for all persons, and a Normal sightseeing fare for one service will be $3.50 flat fare.

Cotter Link/Kambah and Pine Link will be charged at a $1.50 one way or $2.50 return flat fare with no transfers, the same with Kambah Pool Express services. These services would also require new stops in some locations to be erected. Prepay tickets can be purchased for all services from any ticket seller.

Quote900-999 ? Special Events Services
Special Events Services will stop at Specially Signposted Stops, and will be charged at a $1.50 flat fare (Or free depending on the service and if it is subsidized). Services will have a dedicated Interchange bay, and timetables will be set with changes only made to add a service if needed, or to make minor variations in time. A Deletion of a service will only happen when an event is cancelled for good. These are for Canberra?s Major Events away from the City Interchange, like Floriade or the Summernats.  Tuggeranong Interchange will use Platform?s 9 and 10, where Four AdShel shelters will be erected (Two per Platform) with special signage and timetable information, along with CCTV and improved Lighting. Using high capacity articulated buses imported from Europe, these are designed to remove passengers from normal services and to remove the stress of overcrowding on 300 series intertown routes currently seen during special events. Prepay tickets for special events ervices can be purchased at all interchange offices or newsagencies near interchanges.

Some nice ideas there, Todd. I'll add those into the site sometime soon.

I'm also going to add an express service from the Airport to Parliament House. Not sure whether to categorise it under "A", "X" or the 500 series (route 555 perhaps?)

lukeo25

good idea for the cotter & pine island route also it is pain in the *** walking down to pine island from the bus depot on hot day

Irisbus Rider

Some Xpressos;

737 - Torrens Terminus, Torrens, Chifley, Lyons - Then continue on regular 37 route to City.

And, Todd, some fantastic Ideas there, I was thinking, the 820 may as pop into Tidbinbilla STS too.

Sir Pompously

Do you mean the NASA Deep Space Communication Centre?

Irisbus Rider

Yeah, The Tidbinbilla Deep Space Tracking Centre.

Sir Pompously

Official name is Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex or CDSCC ;) Only problem with the is the ride into the tracking station is a fair way in, and the road would need to be improved.

Irisbus Rider

It's only about 5 mins in from the main road the bus would go down.

O305

No offense, but with bumped up fares like that you aren't going to get too many passengers. Just use normal fares, if they market them properly they'll be full all the time anyway.

Sir Pompously

Tourist routes are always bumped up fares, and much lower than what they normally would be from competitive operators (One such is $30). A $7 daily sightseeing is a full day ticket which includes all sightseeing and normal services, hence the bumped up fares. If it is still the cheapest way then people will use it. Of course, it can only run certain days of the week or year like school holidays and weekends for example. For the cotter and pine island services, they are average enough fares and would work well as a flat rate as they are a special service and not a normally running service.

Irisbus Rider

See, one good thing about ACTION is uniform fares, "One fare, Anywhere". To confuse tourists more so, with different fares on tourist runs, and trying to explain to an asian that can't speak english very well that they can't use their Adult Daily ticket on this tourist service would be like negotiating with a brick wall. It just doesn't work.

Operationally, it wouldn't work, sure, it looks good on paper, but so did Network '06, and Network '04, but when push comes to shove, it won't budge.

IMO of course.....

Busnerd

You'd have to list it on the timetable as being a premium service, perhaps a private operator should run it, or perhaps action could run it but only if you book a seat, that way if no one books a ride it doesnt operate and saves them money.

You would book the day before if possible on phone, website or in the interchanges, and also find out if any services have been booked already, for example if you arrive in canberra on monday and wanna ride it monday but didnt know u had to book, call 13 17 10 and see if any services have been booked for that day if so you can join it.

seems very complex but could save money, just like a flexibus tourist route sorta :P

So they wouldn't need to ever run it, except when there's a Buspedition, or when some really poor tourist can't afford any other service? Who the hell would book for that kind of short trip.

What would be the point of running a service if it didn't even get one passenger on some trips.

Buzz Killington

seems to be the best option is to run limited services at first to assess demand, with regular fares in effect.

Bus 400

For these services they could use those Hino's that they have & charge similar to what they did back in 1988.

By running Hino's you'd be doing everything possible to not attract patronage..

Those old fares look so dodgy, I bet everybody would be embarrassed asking for 'an unemployed one way please'.

Irisbus Rider

Ha ha, unemployed! How would they even know?!

Oh, and Bus400, thats way too cheap for todays standards. Things have changed in 20 years.....
