QuoteLast "Galaxy Express" leaves Tokyo Station

Railway enthusiasts take photos of the last Ginga Express as it leaves Tokyo Station on Friday night. (Mainichi)About 2,000 railway fans flooded a Tokyo Station platform to bid farewell to the last "Ginga" sleeper express train bound for Osaka on Friday, waving as the final train departed at 11 p.m. with a whistle.

The 59-year-old Ginga (Galaxy) Express was abolished as the JR railway group revised train schedules across the country on Saturday.

The now defunct Japanese National Railways (JNR) began operating the Ginga Express between Tokyo and Osaka as a night train in 1949, and was popular with salaried workers particularly during the rapid economic growth of the 1960s and the early 70s.

However, its popularity declined in recent years as the bullet train sped up and less expensive night buses became popular. By December 2007, the average bed occupancy rate of the train had declined to about 40 percent.

However, the 260 beds on the last train were booked up only 30 minutes after the railway operator began accepting orders on Feb. 14.

Thats a lot of gunzels!
Were you there John? ;)
Huh?
Were you one of the people gunzelling it?
Why the hell would I spend thousands of dollars to go to Japan, spend 4+ hours on a stupid cramped plane, just to photograph some old crappy train?

It defies my logic.....
