We never really have this problem in Australia. However, this is what you get from stabling a train with its Pantograph up in the Northern Hemisphere during winter.

Frozen pantographs force cancellation of three trains on JR Ome Line

Pantographs that collect electric power from overhead wires were found frozen on Thursday morning, forcing the cancellation of three trains in western Tokyo, the railway operator said.

Mechanics discovered an overhead wire and a pantograph of a train on the JR Itsukaichi Line train were frozen together at around 6:47 a.m., East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) officials said. A pantograph on an Ome Line train was also found frozen to an overhead line at around 7:40 a.m.

Mechanics poured hot water onto the pantographs to melt the ice. Following the trouble, three trains on the two lines were cancelled, inconveniencing about 3,000 passengers, JR East officials said.

The low temperature in Ome, recorded at 7 a.m., was minus 3.7 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees lower than normal.
