Title: Introduce Yourself
Post by: Buzz Killington on January 20, 2010, 07:27:36 PM
A feature on many boards is an "Introduce Yourself" thread. Although we've never had one here, I thought it might be a good idea to add one in.

If you're new to the board, here's the place to say hello. Existing members are also welcome to 'introduce' themselves if they wish!

Thought I would take this opportunity to express something that has been on my mind recently, keeping me up at night so to speak, and I thought I would share.

Hi, my name is Sylvan, I love buses, and I love drawing them too! Although you already know all that, fine, but it seems due to how different my approach to loving buses, is very different to how any of you are enthused by them.

Quote from: #Domelight Drew on October 18, 2016, 11:19:23 PMWhat kind of enthusiast are you?

I'm glad you asked, well...
Quote from: Sylvan Loves Buses on October 20, 2016, 12:11:11 AMI am a new breed of bus enthusiast,
A very different one than any typical one you'd might expect. Not just the ones who go around chasing buses, not just the kind that goes photographing them, not just the kind that knows every little detail right down to how many screws each bus is fitted with. I am completely unique, whilst still sharing a few similarities.

Getting back to the quote I made on the 'What bus did you catch today' post, I was surprised no one asked how I am different to the rest of you, I will probably guess that you don't care, but I will tell anyway, because I want to get it out of my system.
Unlike the rest of you, the way I admire the buses, pursue the interest and identify differences is by using 4 of the 5 body senses. So I would say most of you identify buses by Sound, Sight, and probably Touch (more specifically for those who actually driver the buses), but for me, I go by it with Sound, Sight, Touch/Feel/Sense, and Smell. To elaborate more I will explain each below.

As being a bus enthusiast who grew up with no other knowledge other than what I had been told over the years by other drivers, transport officers, etc, and from the years of studying the bus timetables and maps within my huge messy collection, it is hard to get use to the way things are done here, with all the resources you guys have had access to all this time.
With being a ‘bus lover’, for all the years I spent non-stop talking about buses, it would drive anyone up the wall (mostly cause I had no one to talk to about it other than myself :( ). I don’t remember much of it, but if you asked my mum, she could tell you a 15 year long story about it.

For a little more detail, I have a bus-y photographic, phonographic, haptic and olfactory memory.
I could go on, but then I’d probably start to not make sense to myself. So yeah, that’s me for you. Now I can understand that a lot of that could be very hard to understand/take in, but it’s how I am, how I’ve always been, and probably how I will always be. If you don’t like it, fine, but don’t take it out on me on the forums cause of how different I am. If I say something that’ll likely make you cringe and ‘facepalm’, facepalm your own hand and face into your own desk instead of into my face, or as I was going to say before...
Quote from: Bus 503 on October 28, 2016, 09:52:25 PMI'm not sure what to say to that.
‘Then don’t say anything.’
I’ve had enough of being mocked, abused and ridiculed cause of my differences, and cause of the lack of my knowledge in some areas. So if you want to crucify me, keep it to yourself.

Sylvan just like you have the right to speak your mind others do as well. If they say something you don't agree with then move on...thats life, not everyone in life is going to be nice to you and agree with your views.

You may not realise this, but the site was literally started from scratch about 12 years ago, where Busnerd and myself had access to nothing more than our observations (from which we managed to compile a relatively accurate fleet list), the info on the ACTION website, and the photos we had taken. It's been a long, slow, meticulous build and over the years the information slowly built up as more people came on board (I hate to single out one person because there's been a lot of contributors, but most notably Barry Drive due to the sheer volume of work he has put in) and as we developed a relationship with RATEC.

My point being - pretty much every bus enthusiast started with not much more than their observations in Canberra, so you're certainly not alone in that aspect.

I'm pretty proud of what we have managed to build and every person on the forum contributes to building this site as a resource for Canberra enthusiasts, including yourself, through your bus observations or photos.

And as above, people disagreeing with you is just a fact of life. I'll take this chance to remind members that disagreement does not give the right to be disrespectful, so keep that in mind when you post.

Of course, I completely understand now, thank you.

Also 12 years huh? thought it was 8/9, never mind then.

Yeah I know, but I complain only cause it continues to happen, I try to not throw the insults back, but for some reason they keep coming at me, that's all.

I can't imagine why that is.
Maybe it's the old hats on here not comprehending the 'new breed of enthusiast' that you claim to be.

Or it could be that you are just very special.

If being humiliated is of concern, then why did you post such a thing here?

Cause the number of times I've already humiliated/embarrassed myself on this forum, I didn't think another would matter.
Take my 'introduce myself' comment, a lot on there I would normally not share, but I thought it were necessary.

In which case, I'd suggest not being offended and/or when others comment on something you know will cause humiliation, but you post anyway!

Also last time I checked this was the "introduce yourself" thread not the "quote something from random other topic and make an irrelevant response" thread...

This topic doesn't seem to be used much but I'll prevent it from seizing up by saying 'g'day'. I just joined after viewing the site for a few weeks - I've gotta say it's an impressive data base and thanks to everyone who's put the time and effort into making it what it is.  With a bit more free time on my hands these days I hope I can contribute both with photos and text.

I'm one of those Canberrans who thinks ACTION do a decent job given the constraints of distance and population. I disagree with the whole tram concept,  I view the Tram as a politically motivated farce and I wont be making any contribution in that regard but can only wish that the Bus system had seen the some of the investment in recent years that the tram will be getting.

Anyway no more politics, I'll just enjoy the Forum and all your contributions, many thanks!

I was looking for this thread, so thanks for posting in it.

I found this forum after this was posted on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/PublicTransportAssociationOfCanberraPTCBR/permalink/2026282290716475/

I am a frequent user of another forum that discusses political and social issues.

I also am a frequent user of Action Buses with my own views of how they should be run. One of these days I will start a thread and see how heated it becomes.
