Eight new community parks are being constructed in neighbourhoods across the ACT with work to be completed by June 2010, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Jon Stanhope, announced today.

Construction has started on parks in Chifley, Macarthur, Village Creek, Mount Neighbour and Cook. Work will start on another three parks in Holt, Weston and Rivett next month.

The parks include swings, slides, play equipment, barbeques and picnic settings, bench seats, shade structures, new paths and landscaping.

Mr Stanhope said the Government had invested $2.4 million to establish the parks on the former school sites following extensive consultation with the community.

"Our priority has always been to deliver what the community wants," Mr Stanhope said. "The community made it clear that they wanted to retain green space in their suburbs and I believe the community parks reflect this preference.

"The parks will have play equipment for children, barbecues for picnics and open space for families to enjoy the outdoors."

The ACT Government commenced extensive community consultation on the future use of the sites in June 2008 with the final round of consultation completed in August 2009. The Final Sketch Plans were presented to Community Council meetings and at local shopping centres.

Final sketch plans can be viewed at www.tams.act.gov.au  (under 'Get Involved').
